The Code of Practice for Victims of Crime
The national Code of Practice for Victims of Crime sets out the standards of information and support that victims are entitled to receive from the police and our partners in the criminal justice system.
The code prescribes the stages in an investigation at victims must be notified – such as when someone is arrested, bailed or charged – and the maximum timescales for doing so.
Nottinghamshire Police recognises that victims are at the heart of the criminal justice system and supporting them is a key part of our job.
The code gives victims rights to:
- Information about the crime committed against them within specified timescales. Nottinghamshire Police aims to update victims within one day of a significant development in an investigation, or otherwise within one month.
- An enhanced service to vulnerable and intimidated victims, such as those under 17 or people with a mental disorder or learning disability.
- A dedicated family liaison officer to be assigned to bereaved relatives.
- Information about Victim Support and a referral to Victim Support in appropriate cases.
If you are a victim of crime, you can report it to Nottinghamshire Police on 0115 967 0999. In an emergency always dial 999.
