MEAG

Minority Ethnic Advisory Group (MEAG)

The Minority Ethnic Advisory Group meets every two months, or more frequently if a particular incident or issues arises that is of interest to the group.

This group has recently been reviewed and new members have been appointed.

The MEAG is made up of individual members of the community and representatives of local group and organisations that support the Minority Ethnic community, including:

Members participate in the group as individuals and representatives of organisations that support the Minority Ethnic community.  They reflect the views of their communities, but it is recognised that their views may not represent all views of the Minority Ethnic community.

Proposed aims

  • Inform the delivery of a policing service, which meets the needs of the Minority Ethnic community across Nottinghamshire.
  • Critically appraise police actions and operations at a strategic level, including advising on proposed police actions and operations, particularly advising on the community impact.
  • Build active community consent, trust, confidence and participation of the Minority Ethnic community in policing.
  • Raise the concerns of the Minority Ethnic community on operational issues with the police.
  • To make significant contributions to both strategic and, where appropriate, tactical considerations, particularly with reference to critical incidents.
  • To make observations both within the police service and on the role it plays within the wider community.
  • To promote just and fair relations between the police and the communities they serve, as well as between communities.
  • To critically appraise organisational policies, practices and procedures and in particular to monitor, review and ensure appropriate action is taken in relation to:
    • Hate crime and incidents.
    • Stop and search and Stop and account.
    • The recruitment, retention and progression of BME officers and staff within the Force.

Achievements from the previous MEAG

  • Provided critical friend advice to the police on several occasions following major incidents, to ensure that policing of BME communities was carried out sensitively and communities were reassured e.g. following terrorist activity in London and the impact this had on the Muslim community in Nottingham.
  • Publicising details of gun crime offenders to show that offenders had been brought to justice.
  • Forming a stop search sub group to scrutinise the way that the police carry out stop searches and to understand the perceptions of those people stopped and searched.
