PDAG
The PDAG Group meets every three months, or more frequently if a particular incident or issues arises that is of interest to the group.
The group is made up of individual members of the community and representatives of local groups and organisations that support the disabled communities, including:
- Ann Craft Trust
- Crown Prosecution Service
- Nottingham City Council
- Nottingham MENCAP
- Nottinghamshire County Council
- Nottinghamshire Deaf Society
- Nottinghamshire Police Authority
- Nottinghamshire Royal Society for the Blind
- Portland College
- RAID
- Speaking Up
Members participate in the group as individuals and representatives of organisations that support the disabled community. They reflect the views of their communities, but it is recognised that their views may not represent all views of all the disabled communities.
Our Aims
- To raise awareness in Nottinghamshire Police, their partners and stakeholders (including local authorities) of the needs and wishes of disabled people.
- Nottinghamshire Police will seek the knowledge and experience of disabled people to make the way we work better, starting with the way we talk to people.
- Together we will improve the service for better results.
Our Achievements
Below we have provided a few examples of how the work of PDAG has enhanced the way in which Nottinghamshire police work with disabled people.
- A PDAG member highlighted the difficulties that those with speech impairments have in contacting the police by telephone suggested an improved system that would make this easier. This has resulted in the development of the PEGASUS system. A person who is signed up to PEGASUS is provided with a unique pin number so that if they telephone the police they can provide the pin number immediately and this will alert the operator to the callers special needs. This has already helped a number of callers receive a more prompt and improved response from Nottinghamshire Police. This system is believed to be the first of it’s kind in the UK.
- The Stay Safe card. This has been developed together with PDAG members. The card contains the personal details of the holder which can be useful in emergencies.
- Easy-read guide to hate crime. Members of PDAG were heavily involved in the creation of an easy-read version of the Nottinghamshire Police hate crime leaflet. This booklet
- contains signs and symbols that explain what hate crime is and what someone who is a victim of hate crime can do to protect themselves
- PDAG members have also made observations both within the police service and on the role it plays within the wider community e.g. improving physical access to police stations.
- Supported a PDAG member to promote road safety in schools.
