Safer Neighbourhoods

What is Safer Neighbourhoods?
Safer Neighbourhoods is the name given to Neighbourhood Policing in Nottinghamshire.  It is the cornerstone of the modern police service because by working with our partners and our communities, that’s exactly what we want to achieve.

How we create Safer Neighbourhoods
Every street in Nottinghamshire is allocated a local beat team. These officers are a part of their community. They are visible and accessible and it’s you who decides what they focus their efforts on.  It’s about putting you at the centre of what we do; providing local police for local people and working with all other agencies necessary to tackle the issues that matter where you live.
So, if you have a problem that does not require an immediate response, call your beat team.

Finding your beat team
If you don’t know how then simply enter your postcode into the finder on the left. Here you will discover pictures of the officers and their contact details - desk and mobile phone numbers plus an email address. There will also be a date and time of the next opportunity to meet with your team plus a report on their recent activity, progress and any positive results.
Alternatively, you can call 0300 300 9999 or look out for Safer Neighbourhoods posters on display throughout your community.

Have your say!
There are around 200 beat teams across Nottinghamshire grouped together into 38 neighbourhoods. Each Neighbourhood Policing Team targets three priorities identified by the public using priority surveys, or through discussions at regular public meetings. Furthur local issues for the police to tackle at beat level are also selected in this way.
You can let us know what is important to you by filling in a priority survey. These are vailable from your local beat team or your local police station.
In return, your officers will let you know what they are working on by posting monthly updates online and displaying information on posters across your neighbourhood.

Beat teams
Depending on the size of the area and population covered by a particular beat, your team could number anything from one to half a dozen officers, or more.

This team will consist of some or all of the following:

Police Constables (PCs)  - responsible for reducing crime and protecting the public, while tackling problems identified by the community.  These are likely to include anti-social behaviour as well as criminal activity.  It is their responsibility to make you feel safe where you live.

Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) - uniformed police staff who provide reassurance and a visible presence. They have a significant number of enforcement powers to tackle low level anti-social behaviour, including the ability to issue fixed penalty notices.

Community Protection Officers -  these are uniformed staff who focus on low level anti-social behaviour and environmental crime such as dog fouling, litter and graffiti. They are employed by the local authority but do not currently operate in all areas of Nottinghamshire.

Beat teams may also be assisted by:

  • Special Constables - volunteer police officers who have the same powers as regular officers
  • Partner agencies - representatives of other organisations - eg local authorities, fire and rescue service, housing assocations, probation service, health workers etc - who work with Nottinghamshire Police to create Safer Neighbourhoods.
