Safer Neighbourhoods

What is Safer Neighbourhoods?

Safer Neighbourhoods is our approach to providing local policing for local people.  As part of the Force’s vision of ‘Policing for you’ we have provided every neighbourhood with its own Safer Neighbourhood Team.

We have identified approximately 200 geographical neighbourhoods.  This figure may slightly increase or decrease in the future due to a consultation process with partners and communities but we are committed to keeping neighbourhoods small and relevant to local people

Working in partnership with other agencies, we are committed to providing you with a visible and accessible service that is flexible and responsive to community and individual needs.

This means providing you with a Safer Neighbourhood team that is

  • Visible and easy to contact in person, by phone, or by internet
  • Routinely consults with you to find out what your concerns and priorities are
  • Works with you and partner agencies to tackle the problems you have identified
  • Provides you with regular feedback about the things we have done

Safer Neighbourhood Teams

Each neighbourhood has a Safer Neighbourhood team.
Some teams cover more than one neighbourhood.  The exact make up of a team depends on the size of the neighbourhood or how busy it is but may include a combination of;

Beat Managers – police officers that are primarily responsible for tackling the priorities identified by the community.  This may include criminal activity but also includes anti social behaviour.  It is their responsibility to not only make you safer but also make you feel safer in the communities that you live, work or socialise.

Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs), - uniformed police staff who through patrolling your neighbourhoods provide reassurance and a visible policing presence. They have a significant number of enforcement powers to tackle low level anti social behaviour including the ability to issue fixed penalty notices.

Wardens / Community Protection Officers, - uniformed staff employed by the local Authority.  These officers fulfil a similar role to PCSOs with a focus on low level anti social behaviour and environmental crime such as dog fouling, litter and graffiti.

Special Constables, - volunteer police officers who have the same powers as regular officers

Partner agencies, - representatives of other agencies who are working together to make neighbourhoods safer.

Your Safer Neighbourhood Team wants to hear from you to understand and help solve the issues that are affecting your life and those around you. We can make a difference by working together to solve a problem
