Meet the team
Nottinghamshire Police's Mounted Section is a busy and much sought after resource. The horses and officers patrol daily throughout Nottinghamshire and their work often extends to other force areas in the United Kingdom.
A key area of work for the Section is Public Order. This means that our horses are regularly deployed at football matches and demonstrations and they work late into the night helping to prevent alcohol-related violence as pubs and clubs turn out.
They can be seen most evenings in Nottingham city and other town centres and their presence alone is often sufficient to prevent antisocial behaviour and other types of crime from occurring.
Our horses patrol daily to provide a high visibility presence and community reassurance as well as, vitally, deterring criminals from committing crimes such as burglary and theft.
They will spend up to six hours a day on patrol and the officers are often approached by members of the public who say how pleased they are to see the teams out and about in their neighbourhood.
You can get regular updates from our Mounted Section by following the team on Twitter at @policehorses or visit www.twitter.com/policehorses
Our horses
Eros
Our youngest horse Eros likes to scratch his ears by standing on three legs and using his fourth leg to get to the itch. Since joining the force in 2011 he has had his first full hair cut and set of shoes.
Did you know?
Eros is our only horse to have a moustache!
Maximus
Maximus is a good all-round police horse and likes being out on patrol. He is best friends with Lord Byron and is our second longest-serving police horse. He likes to take things slowly when leaving the horse box and has to have a good look around him to see what is going on.
Did you know?
Maximus is the fastest walker on the team but the slowest eater.
King
King enjoys variety in his work. You will regularly see him patrolling the streets and most weekends at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground. He is very playful in the field and jumps up the ramp when loading him onto the lorry.
Did you know?
King is our tallest horse.
Lionheart
Lionheart regularly enjoys working at parades with his best friend Trojan and he has the largest feet on the section. He is a gentle giant.
Did you know?
Lionheart has a grade 1 haircut every three weeks.
Lord Byron
When he joined the force, Lord Byron was the youngest police horse trainee ever to become a member of the team.
He is our smallest horse and specialises in teaching new officers joining the Mounted Section. He loves food and has a special diet to stop him gaining too much weight.
Did you know?
Lord Byron is our longest serving police horse - he joined the force in 1996.
Loxley
Loxley is the most affectionate horse in our team – he prefers humans to his fellow horses. He loves being groomed.
Did you know?
Loxley came to us with the name Murphy and was renamed by local schoolchildren.

Trojan
Trojan’s favourite job is attending football matches and taking part in parades with Lionheart and King. He enjoys getting dirty in the field but doesn’t enjoy being bathed afterwards.
Did you know?
Trojan is very protective of his stable.
