Freedom of Information - Information about things other than people
Public organisations have a duty to make available, on request, information about how they operate and spend money.
For police forces, this can include details about the number of incidents reported, reports of crime and policing operations.
This kind of information may be disclosed under the Freedom of Information Act.
Not all information will be disclosed, as the Act includes specific exemptions under which we may refuse to disclose information.
This could include information that may damage our ability to detect crime and prosecute offenders if we disclosed it, information about a living person or commercially sensitive information. This is not a complete list of exemptions - how the Act is applied is complicated. Please see the link below to the Information Commissioners Office for more information about the Freedom of Information Act.
Applying for information under the Freedom of Information Act
There is no charge for information provided under the Act.
All requests for information must be made in writing and you should give your name and an email or postal address where we can send the information you have requested.
We have up to 20 days to process requests made under the Freedom of Information Act.
It can take longer if it is not clear what information you are requesting. In these cases, we may write back to you asking for clarification - this may delay your request being dealt with. Any information you can give us to help clearly identify the information you are requesting will help us to process your request more quickly.
If obtaining the information you have requested is likely to take more than 18 hours, we may decline to disclose the information. If this happens, you will be informed and given an option to pay for the costs of obtaining the information or to redefine your request.
It is helpful if you provide us with as much information as possible when making a request. For example, rather than ask for 'all information', specify what kind of information you really need and covering what time periods. This will help us to quickly process your request.
Freedom of Information Disclosure Log
We publish a log of responses to requests made previously under the Freedom of Information Act.
Before submitting a request under Freedom of Information, please check the disclosure log to see if your question has already been answered.
Publication Scheme - Publishing non-personal information
We routinely publish non-personal information under what is called the Freedom of Information Publication Scheme.
The publication scheme covers the routine publication of financial information, registers, details of who our senior officers and staff are and expenses.
Please check the publication scheme before making a request for information, as the information you're looking for may have already been published.
Information Commissioner's Office
The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) is the regulator responsible for ensuring organisations, including the police, applies the Freedom of Information Act properly and lawfully.
