CCTV issued in purse thefts inquiry

Updated on 10th January 2012

Police have issued CCTV images of a number of people they would like to speak to about purse thefts in Mansfield town centre.

A number of thefts have been reported in the past two months and it is believed the offenders follow the same method on each occasion.

They appear to wait in and around banks for usually elderly victims, who are then watched as they enter their debit card PIN number into a cash machine.

The victim is then followed as they shop, during which time their purse or wallet is stolen.

In some instances, a number of women and a man have approached victims in charity shops, asking them for advice on clothing to distract them while their purse is stolen.

The debit card is later used to withdraw money at cash machines outside the Mansfield area.

PCSO James Wilkinson said: “We believe the individuals in these CCTV images may be able to provide us with vital information about these purse thefts.

“I’d like them or anyone who knows who they are to contact us at the earliest opportunity.

“Shoppers also need to be aware of these thefts and should take care about where they put purses and how they enter their PIN numbers into cash machines.

“Always be aware of anyone standing near you if you are at a cash machine and while entering your PIN code with one hand, shield it with the other so that the numbers you enter cannot be seen.

“Purses and wallets should ideally be kept in a zipped up inner pocket in a back or coat. If that is not possible, place them at the bottom of your shopping bag underneath other items. Never leave them at the top of the bag.”

Anyone who recognises the individuals in the CCTV images or knows anything about the purse thefts should telephone Nottinghamshire Police on 101, ext 805 3442.

Alternatively, they can call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
