Bikes targeted by thieves in Sutton

Cyclists are being warned to ensure their bikes are left locked and secure following a spate of thefts in the Sutton-in-Ashfield area.

Push bikes have been snatched from sheds, streets, shops and outside houses with 16 thefts reported to police since the beginning of December last year.

In one of the latest incidents an unlocked BMX was stolen from outside a fast food restaurant in Priestsic Road at about 12.50pm on Friday 6 January 2012.

And a black mountain bike, secured with a bike lock, was taken from outside a supermarket in the same street at about 8pm on Tuesday 10 January.

Inspector Carl Holland, Neighbourhood Police Inspector for Ashfield North, said: “Bikes of all makes and value have been targeted in the recent spate. Pedal cycles have been stolen from sheds, garages and outside shops and houses, despite being left locked and secure.

“Officers are conducting night time patrols in and around Sutton-in-Ashfield to deter and catch the offenders committing these crimes.

“Residents can help us too by checking their sheds are secured with a good quality padlock and that garage doors are also securely shut. If possible, a bike should be left locked to something fixed, even if it’s left inside a shed.”
