Computer security

  • Computers, servers and related equipment, such as printers and scanners, are some of the most expensive items a business will buy so try to keep them secure;

  • Try to disguise laptop carrying cases by placing them inside a plastic bag or a rucksack. If you are away from the office carrying a laptop be aware of your surroundings and look out for anyone who could be following you;

  • Use physical measures to stop thieves from stealing personal computers. Cable ties, security screws and lockdown plates will deter thieves from stealing computer systems;

  • Thieves who are unable to steal whole computer systems may resort to “chip dipping”. This means they will break open the computer case to steal valuable internal components – such as memory modules and processors;

  • Use an internet firewall to secure your network from outside attack, regularly sweep your computers for viruses and encourage your staff not to open any suspicious email attachments;

  • Make back up copies of all your important documents and store them off-site. If criminals do damage your systems – either physically or electronically – you could lose important information.
