Cash points

  • Where possible use cash points located inside banks or ones located in places where there are plenty of people
  • If you must use a cash point at night, only use ones located in well-lit, busy locations
  • If you see someone hanging around the cash point you intend to use, walk away and find an alternative machine or go back later
  • Before inserting your card check the slot to make sure there is no plastic sleeve inside. Criminals are known to use a sleeve device to retain cards and then pick them up later. If you find one remove it from the machine and hand it to the police
  • Cover the keyboard with your spare hand while you type in your PIN number to prevent anyone seeing the digits you have entered
  • Only withdraw the minimum amount of cash you require and put it away immediately
  • Never keep details of your PIN with your card. If you have trouble remembering your PIN and have to write it down, disguise it by incorporating it into a phone number
  • Never share your PIN with anyone or ask anyone to withdraw cash on your behalf
  • If your cards are stolen you should report the theft to your bank or credit card company as soon as possible. Most banks and credit card companies operate a 24-hour phone service to report stolen or lost cards
