Homophobic and transphobic crime

Homophobic and transphobic adviceHarassment of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people is a crime. It is any incident perceived to be homophobic by the victim of the offence or any other person.

A homophobic incident is any offensive conduct or behaviour aimed at an individual or group because of their sexuality or presumed sexuality.

Some incidents, such as abuse, insults and threats are very obvious. Others, such as damage to property or malicious complaints, may be less obvious.

Nottinghamshire Police and its Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Consultative Group encourage the reporting of all homophobic incidents to the police.

You can report an incident by telephone, in person or in writing to your local police station.

In an emergency always ring 999. You can also contact the Stop Hate 24 hour telephone helpline on 0800 138 1625 or visit www.stophateuk.org

You can also seek help and advice from other organisations, including your local council, a solicitor, the Nottingham Lesbian and Gay Switchboard on 0115 934 8485, the GAi Project on 0115 947 6868 or Victim Support in Nottinghamshire on 0845 450 3899.
