Road safety cameras
Road safety cameras help to keep down the number of motorists and pedestrians killed or injured on the roads by encouraging road users to obey speed signs and traffic signals.
If you travel around our county you will probably see static road safety cameras and mobile cameras operated by the Nottinghamshire Safety Camera Partnership.
The partnership is a joint initiative between local authorities, the emergency services – including Nottinghamshire Police – and other agencies in Nottinghamshire. It was established in 2000 as part of a national scheme to encourage local organisations to work together to improve road safety.
The partnership’s main objectives are to:
- Ensure that motorists keep to speed limits and obey traffic signals
- Educate road users about the steps they can take to reduce the risk of becoming involved in a road accident
It is a common misconception that the police profit from fining speeding motorists. This is not true. Money from fines is received by the Department for Constitutional Affairs. Safety Camera Partnerships may claim back only their operating costs.
And road safety cameras are not intended to ‘catch out’ motorists. Details of where static and mobile cameras are sited in Nottinghamshire are published on NOTTSPEED, the Nottinghamshire Safety Camera Partnership website.
Safety cameras may be also be in use in several locations across the county that are subject to complaints to the police about speeding traffic. Due to the ad hoc nature of these complaints it is impossible to publish this activity in advance.
Nottinghamshire Police also has speed detection equipment fitted in some of its patrol and response vehicles, enabling officers to enforce the speed limit on any section of road anywhere in the county.
