Police community support officers (PCSOs)

Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) help to police and protect the quality of life in Nottinghamshire’s neighbourhoods.
PCSOs are not police officers and they do not have the same powers, but they are employees of Nottinghamshire Police, they wear a uniform, they help to uphold law and order and they provide a reassuring visible presence on the streets.
PCSOs work alongside regular officers, special constables and local authority-employed wardens in Safer Neighbourhood Teams. Their duties include:
- Taking part in proactive policing operations
- Dealing with truants, graffiti, abandoned vehicles and litter problems
- Assisting in house to house enquiries and giving crime prevention advice
- Helping to support victims and witnesses of crime
- Tackling low-level anti-social behaviour
- Patrolling major public events
- Liaising with local neighbourhood watch and other community groups
What powers do PCSOs have?
PCSOs have some of the enforcement powers held by police constables. A full list of the powers currently held by PCSOs in Nottinghamshire appears in the link below.
The Chief Constable has authorised the designation of PCSOs with the powers listed below under the provisions of Schedule 4 to the Police Reform Act 2002 and Schedules 8 and 9 to the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 2005.
PCSOs can only exercise these powers whilst wearing their uniform and they are required to produce, upon request, a ‘designation card’ when exercising any such powers. This card lists all the powers that the PCSO is designated to exercise.
