Community engagement and recruitment event
The Community Engagement and Recruitment event held at John Carroll Leisure Centre and Mellors Primary School, Radford, Nottingham on Wednesday 9 May 2007 was well attended by around 120 members of surrounding local communities.
Nottinghamshire Police joined forces with other key public sector organisations in a drive to raise awareness and increase recruitment amongst black and minority ethnic groups.
The event is just one of the many community initiatives undertaken by the force which reflects the community we serve.
Support for the event was provided by different departments within Nottinghamshire Police, including the Mounted Section, Recruitment, Black Police Association, PCSOs, Police Officers, Special Constables and staff promoting Neighbourhood Policing.
During the event all members of the public had an opportunity to meet and talk to Police Officers and Police Staff members as well as enjoy entertainment from Michelle `The Mother` Hubbard who created poetry.
The poem below showcases Michelle’s poem based on events at the event.
CELEBRATING OUR ACHIEVEMENT!

Times are changing
This is empowering
Look at the skills that
BME communities can bring!
Meeting community people
And community organisations
Builds positive community relations
Targeting, embracing, celebrating
The atmosphere here is interesting; elating!
Feeding the stomach as well as the mind
It’s good to find
Community and public sector
Working productively together
This has opened up brand new doors
To people that would never consider it before
Togetherness. Solidarity.
Our future. We have unity
Look at us! I’m speechless!
Race equality - becoming a reality
BME in uniform
Looking smart and on form!
WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Doing it for ourselves
Getting good jobs. Reaching our goals
Freedom means freedom of choice, and equal pay!
Let’s celebrate what has happened here today
People believing. People succeeding
Bonding (bondage?) BON-JOVI!
It’s good to have fun as well, you see!
And the children, having fun!
We aren’t nervous
Let’s promote the prison service
POSITIVELY –
Join in with me!
Harmony has just walked through the door
One that has always been shut before
But times are changing.
Times are changing!
