Specials

The people of Nottinghamshire can play a vital role in helping Nottinghamshire Police to deliver and improve its service by becoming a Special Constable.

Special Constables are volunteer police officers and come from all walks of life – they are teachers, HGV drivers, paramedics, taxi drivers, administrators and many other careers.

They volunteer for a minimum of four hours a week to help the force to form a vital link between the regular police and the community.

The Special Constabulary has a long and proud tradition of more than 150 years. We are looking for people to come forward and uphold this tradition with Nottinghamshire Police.

In Nottinghamshire, we currently have more than 300 people who put their spare time to good use by becoming a Special Constable.  

They get involved in a variety of tasks, dealing with such things as antisocial behaviour, patrolling the cities, towns and villages, serving warrants and performing vehicle checks, Special Constables have the same powers as regular officers and wear the same uniform.

Nottinghamshire Special Constables perform thousands of duty hours each year; many spent on specific operations targeting areas of the community where repeated complaints from residents are received in relation to antisocial behaviour.

Becoming a Special Constable

To be eligible to become and Special Constable, you must meet the following criteria:

• You must have been a resident in the UK for a minimum of three years and have permission to reside and work in the UK.
• You must be 18 or over.
• You cannot be employed in an occupation that would conflict with your duties as a Special Constable – full details are available here.

We would prefer candidates to initially attend an Awareness Seminar before submitting their application form to ensure they have a full understanding of the recruiting process, the role and the responsibilities of a Special Constable.
