Elkesley & East Markham

Back to East Bassetlaw

The Elkesley/ East Markham Policing area is roughly divided in two by the A1. The area starts to the north of Retford town and extends south to East Markham. The westerly boundaries are marked by the A614 and the easterly boundary lies along the villages of Askham and Rockley. It is a predominantly rural and farming area but also contains some industrial areas and the local airfield at Gamston. The Markham Moor Service area on the A1 comprises of food outlets, petrol forecourts and accomodation. There is also a large truck stop area that provides secure parking for large goods vehicles.

Under the Policing Pledge, this is a rural beat and has a 20 minute emergency response time. For an explanation of what this means click here.

Beat Update

Update June 2013

For the month of May 2013, the following crimes have occurred on the Elkesley & East Markham Beat Area:-

3 x Theft from Vehicle ( A1, Markham Moor and Gamston)
3 x Theft Other (Cleveland Hill, Rockly and Markham Moor)
1 x Theft of Vehicle (East Markham)
1 x Theft of Peddle Cycle (Clumber)
1 x Bilking (Markham Moor)
3 x Possession of Controlled Drugs (Bothamsall, Gamston and Bevercotes)
2 x Criminal Damage to a Vehicle (Elkesley and Bevercotes)

With the price of fuel spiralling again, diesel and oil thefts have increased again over the last month, especially in remote rural areas. Please secure all fuel tanks with good quality locks – a good lock costs much less than a tank of diesel. Ask your fuel supplier for details of the latest security devices such as the one which calls your mobile phone if the level in your tank falls suddenly.

Residents are reminded that there has been and continues to be an increased issue over offenders breaking into sheds and garages across East Bassetlaw.
Shed alarms can prove very effective and, recently at Retford, offenders who broke into a shed during the early hours of darkness made off with nothing after the owners shed alarm activated.
Residents are reminded that shed alarms are available at cost price, of ten pounds each, from the following locations –
Harworth Town Council offices on Scrooby Road, Harworth.
The Mine of Information, Market Place, Tuxford.
Misterton Police and Council contact point.

Shed security tips:
• Keep your shed in good condition.
• Fit a closed shackle padlock to the door. Fittings should be bolted through the door and any screws concealed.
• Fit grilles or mesh to the windows.
• Invest in an alarm.
Once you have improved the physical security of your shed, it is important to make everything inside it secure. Tools and equipment could be used to force entry into your home, causing you even more expense and inconvenience.
Make sure that –
Large items, such as bicycles, are chained together. It is more difficult for a criminal to carry away a lot of large heavy items at once.
Ladders are locked to a secure fixture in the shed or garage so that they cannot be used to reach any top floor windows of your house.
Your valuables should be marked with your postcode, or with Smartwater.
www.immobilise.com allows you to register property from your address on a database, which can be searched. .

Please continue to report all suspicious persons, vehicles and activity to the control room on 101. Where a crime is in progress, or has just occurred, please continue to use the 999 number. Calls of this nature do make a difference in helping to drive crime figures lower.
