Magnus and Devon

Back to Newark

The Magnus and Devon beat, which is known locally as 'Hawtonville', covers quite a large area, with the main borders being Hawton Road, Grange Road and London Road. The beat covers some of the town centre stretching as far as Appleton Gate and also the allotments and industrial area off Bowbridge Road. Magnus and Devon is a largely residential area containing a mixture of council and privately owned properties. Serving the area we have three primary schools, The Magnus secondary school and Newark Hospital which is centrally located. Within the residential areas we also have some rural patches and various play parks.

The estate utilises retail premises working within the catering and hospitality industries, such as public houses and off licenses, takeaways and convenience stores. We are also lucky to have a community centre on Cleveland Square which is available for use by residents, and a young people's centre on Windsor Avenue which holds regular events for the youth around the estate.

According to the 2001 census results Magnus and Devon have a combined population of 9682 residents with a total of 4166 households.

We are happy to say that the crimes rates for this area have decreased by 18% in comparison to those of the same period last year.

Under the Policing Pledge, this is an urban beat and has a 15 minute emergency response time. For an explanation of what this means click here.

Community Update - 03/01/2011

Happy New Year! We are looking for new challenges for 2012, so if you have any ideas of how the area can be improved or anything you would like to see implemented then please contact us to discuss.

The Hawtonville estate has seen a reduction in anti-social behaviour and crime over the Christmas Period and into the New Year and we hope to keep this going throughout 2012. An area the goup are paying particular attention to is the removing and demolishing sites and locations that attract youths to cause anti-social behaviour. Sites such as the now derelict Hawtonville Healt Centre and the former Nursery on Beckett Street. These locations are a hive for anti-social behaviour and also do not help improve the image of the beat.

Community update - 19/10/2011

In the last two weeks a male subjected to An Anti Social Behaviour Order has breached his conditions twice on the Hawtonville Estate. This male has now been arrested and charged for Breach of ASBO
The Safer Neighbourhood Group are holding a training session for The Community Speed Watch Program on the 26th October at 6pm at The Cleveland Square Community Centre. If anyone would like to be involved please come along on the night or contact PCSO Amanda Wheatcroft at Newark Police Station.

Community update - 01/10/2011

The DPPO is now up and running in the whole of Magnus and Devon area , 2 males have already been issued a fixed penalty notice for not abiding by this order which will result in them both gaining a £50 fine.

The dispersal area has been reinstated due to a number of ASB issues in Aug . 8 youths were arrested after 3 trees were damaged in St Marys Gardens , one youth ended up having an ASBO this stops him from entering the area and from also hanging around with 8 of his mates , the ASBO stops with him for 2 years..
