NEWARK TOWN CENTRE



Newark Town Centre is an historical market Town divided by the River Trent. It has a population in excess of 6000 inhabitants living in approximately 2800 private households and a further 360 non domestic properties.

The Town is predominantly a working town where citizens and shoppers transit through between 0700 and 1800 during the day. Newark’s nightlife is available until the early hours at two local nightclubs. The Town has the Castle Railway Station, two large Supermarkets as well as a mixture of interesting commercial businesses and private dwellings.

Newark Town Centre has a multicultural Community with four junior Schools and a College of further education and two Marinas.

The Town Centre also covers the old Cattle Market and Vehicle Park leading up towards the main island and the A46. Across the island is the A617 and A616 the latter route taking you towards the British Sugar site and the A617 takes you past the Newark Rugby Club towards Kelham.

The Beat also covers Farndon Road and Devon, Sconce Park, Hawton Road Allotment and associated residential housing.

Beat Update

Cluster level priorities for the Newark area of Newark and Sherwood District are set at quarterly Priority Setting Meetings held at Kelham Hall. These meetings consist of the local neighbourhood Policing Inspector and the chairs of the Safer Neighbourhood Groups from each of the beat team areas who raise the issues brought to them at the local Safer neighbourhood Group. The dates for these meetings are shown in each beat area. Also considered are local crime and anti social behaviour trends and the results of crime surveys. The dates for the priority setting meetings are;

Update 22/01/2012
There have been infringements of the Designated Public Place Order in the Town Centre which has resulted in a small number of confiscations. The Town Centre is benefitting from the reduced number of incidents and the visitors and community are enjoying a better environment.
Newark Shopwatch has been introduced to the Newark Town Centre shop’s and businesses. This will have a consequence to all shoplifters in the area as offenders may now be banned from all shops which are on the scheme for a period of twelve months.

Update 05/01/2012
The town centre beat team have been work on a number of Operations to target shop theft, ASB, Street drinking and burglary.
We have giving Smartwater and crime prevention advice out in the market place for cycle owners to help stop cycle theft and to help identify stolen cycles that have been recovered by the police.

Update 20/12/2011
Reports of Street Drinking in Newark Town centre have reduced. Statements have been taken from residents and Town workers in relation to ASB caused by certian individuals and will be used to apply for ASBO's on those causing the nuisance.
Extra patrols are being conducted in the Town Centre by Police Officers and PCSOs in the lead up to Christmas.

Update 19/10/2011

Over the past two weeks a large amount of alcohol has been confiscated in the Newark Town Centre in conjunction with the Designated Public Place order. 20 bottles of beer have been confiscated from one male alone.
Another male has also been fined for failing to surrender his alcohol to an Officer.
On the 19th October one male has also been reported for the Offence of Urinating in a public place in broad day light in the busy town centre.
The beat team are also very busy patrolling the Town centre along with the Anti Social Behaviour team from Newark and Sherwood District Council. Statements are in the process of being taken in relation to Anti Social behaviour in The Church Gardens in Newark Town Centre, which will lead to applications being made for ASBO’s for several individuals.
