Geographical explanation for the villages south of Newark.



The Farndon and Elston beat area cover the villages south of Newark. The follow villages are included in the Farndon and elston Beat:

Alverton, Cotham. East Stoke,Elston, Farndon, Hawton, Kilvington, Staunton in the Vale, Syerston, Thorpe.

The area is in the whole a rural community with Farndon being the most populated village, situated just south of Newark. The area extends to the Rushcliffe Policing area to the south, Lincolnshire and Leicestershire Policing areas to the east. The west is boarded by the River Trent.

The A46 trunk road travels through the area, giving access to most of the above villages. This road is currently being up graded and will be a dual carriageway by 2012.

With the exception of Farndon all the villages have an active Neighbourhood Watch covering the whole village. Alverton, East Stoke, Elston, Farndon and Kilvington also have active Speed Watch Groups.

There is a Police Contact Point within the Memorial Hall, Marsh Lane, Farndon. This is staffed by nine community volunteers between 2pm – 4pm each weekday and 7pm-9pm on fridays(These times may vary).

The Safer Neighbourhood Group meets Quarterly at various locations around the area. Parish Councillors, Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinators and other prominent figures within the community attend the meeting. The District Councillor for the area, Mr Ivor Walker, chairs the group.

There are two primary schools, one at Farndon and one at Elston. There is also a residential school for children with learning difficulties at Elston. Elston and Farndon also provide a nursery for pre-school children.

There are village halls at the majority of the villages offering many activities to residents.



Cluster level priorities for the Newark area of Newark and Sherwood District are set at quarterly Priority Setting Meetings held at Kelham Hall. These meetings consist of the local neighbourhood Policing Inspector and the chairs of the Safer Neighbourhood Groups from each of the beat team areas who raise the issues brought to them at the local Safer neighbourhood Group. The dates for these meetings are shown in each beat area. Also considered are local crime and anti social behaviour trends and the results of crime surveys. Beat Priorities

Through consultation with the members of the public in this beat we regularly set out a number of priorities to be tackled.

  • Anti-Social Behaviour and Off Road Vehicles within the Community Show details
    A survey was taken using the number of Incidents created by calls from the community within our beat area and a number of incidents, which have also been reported to the Safer Neighbourhood Team. It was discussed as a priority at the last Safer Neighbourhood Group meeting that during the evenings Youths are congregating and are engaging in Anti-Social Behaviour particularly on Marsh Lane in Farndon and that at various times in the day Off Road Motor Bikes and Mini Motor Bikes are also being ridden in and around the Farndon and Southern Villages Areas.

    This priority will be reviewed at the next Safer Neighbourhood Group Meeting, which will take place in January 2012.

    Our Response
    The local Police Safer Neighbourhood Team have taken reports of individuals engaging in Anti-Social Behaviour in and around Farndon as well as using Off Road vehicles in an anti social and illegal manner in and around the southern villages.

    We are encouraging the community to ring in any incidents of Anti-Social Behaviour and highlight any individuals that they see committing these acts.

    To help combat the issues raised the Safer Neighbourhood Team in conjunction with the Off Road Team the Special Constabulary and along with the local Anti-Social Team from Newark and Sherwood District Council will be providing high visibility patrols in these areas at appropriate times.

    Any group or individual reported/seen and identified engaging in any anti social act will be stopped and dealt with in the appropriate manner.
    This would be by the use of a verbal/written warnings; the issuing of fixed penalty tickets and even where the need arises vehicles will be seized where appropriate.
    The use of Media and Leaflet drops in and around the locality as well as in the local schools will help to highlight any Anti Social Behaviour along with the legality of owning any Off Road vehicle.
    We will also be incorporating a Multi Agency approach with any individual or group should the need arise.

    Use will also be made of stop search powers.

    Do you know where your children are tonight?
    What are they doing?

    It has come to the attention of the Safer Neighbourhood Police Team that there is still a small minority of children going around Farndon Village engaging in acts of Anti-Social Behaviour.

    We are asking you the community that if you see or hear anything in relation to these crimes for you to contact the Police on 101.

    We want to be able to identify and deal with these individuals.

    Over the next coming months we the Safer Neighbourhood Team will be taking part in Operation Animism, which relates to attending and tackling reports of Anti Social Behaviour in and around your Community.

    Your local Police Team along with the Special Constabulary and other partner agencies will be conducting High Visibility Patrols.

    We will be taking positive action against anyone found undertaking any act of Anti Social Behaviour and persistent offenders will be visited at home and may be asked to enter into an Antisocial Behaviour Contract with the Police and Newark and Sherwood District Council.

  • Burglaries and Distraction Burglaries Show details
    It has been identified at the last Safer Neighbourhood Group Meeting and through surveys carried out with local residents that the fear of Dwelling Burglaries / Distraction Burglaries is a concern for residents throughout the southern rural villages.
    It has therefore been agreed to adopt this concern as a Safer Neighbourhood Beat Priority.
    This priority will be reviewed at the next Safer Neighbourhood Community Meeting, which will take place in January 2012.

    Our Response
    The Safer Neighbourhood Team along with the local Neighbourhood Watch Members will offer and deliver free crime reduction advice to householders within these rural communities.

    We will update local communities with our actions taken and we will also provide further High Visibility Patrols in and around these rural village locations to offer further reassurance.


    Intelligence will be gathered by means of Stop and Search powers on any known offenders found to be in and around these rural locations and we will look at taking positive action where required.

    23/12/2011

    We the Safer Neighbourhood Police Team have to report that after a call regarding a Burglary in progress was made to the Police a number of Officers attended Farndon Village; this included the Police helicopter and a Police Dog Unit.

    With a well coordinated search made by the officers the helicopter and the dog unit, two males were arrested nearby in relation to the burglary and are currently helping police with their enquiries.

    Over the period of November we the Police have taken a number of reports regarding sheds that have been broken into and items stolen from within.

    This priority has been discussed at the last Safer Neighbourhood Community Meeting.
    I would like to thank all those that attended, and we have agreed to keep this priority active.

    I also have to report that we have had two further incidents reported regarding outbuildings having been broken into and items stolen. Again if you saw or heard anything suspicious in and around the area at the time, then please contact the Police on 101 quoting the reference number.

    Between 9.30am on 21/10/2011 and 12.30pm on 22/10/2011 along the A 46 near to Elston a unit has been broken into and items stolen. Please Quote BN/082950/11.

    On the 23/10/2011 at 9.00pm and 24/10/2011 at 7.30am a farm building in Elston was entered and items stolen from within. Please Quote BN/083195/11
  • Rural / Agricultural Crime Show details
    It was discussed at the last Safer Neighbourhood Community meeting that the southern communities were becoming concerned with regards to the increase in rural crime in and around their villages / farms

    It has therefore been agreed to adopt this concern as a Safer Neighbourhood Beat Priority.
    This priority will then be reviewed at the next Safer Neighbourhood Group Meeting, which will take place in January 2012.

    Your Safer Neighbourhood Team will be looking at visiting all the local farms within their rural area that they police.

    As well as introducing ourselves to the owners/farmers, we will want to offer further Crime Reduction advice and we will also be looking at working with the NFU in order to identify any issues within or around the local farming community.

    Your Police Safer Neighbourhood Team has been conducting high visibility in and around the rural communities.

    We have to report that there has been two incidents of theft from the construction area off the A46, one being of fuel from a vehicle and the other being machinery items.

    Also we have taken a report of a trailer that has been stolen from a yard in Staunton in the Vale.

    If you did see or hear anything in relation to these incidents then please contact the Police on 101

    We would like to ask you the community that if you should see or hear anything suspicious in or around your village it probably is.

Neighbourhood Watch/Alert

What is it?
The Neighbourhood Alert system is now available anywhere in Nottinghamshire, with thirty different websites providing access to the interactive tools, messaging and reporting facilities. It’s a free service that enables residents of Nottinghamshire to engage with the police and Neighbourhood Watch. You do not need to be involved with Neighbourhood Watch to join but if you are, the free scheme management tools provide messaging, street mapping and support.
