Manton

Back to Worksop South Cluster

Manton on the South East Beat is a former mining village and suburb of south-east Worksop, north Nottinghamshire. Manton Colliery was one of the few pits in the county to generally support the strike in 1984-5.

Mantons main source of employment for a 100 years or thereabouts was the Colliery sunk by The Wigan Coal Company in the late 1800s. The pit village was constructed soon afterwards to accommodate the families of miners who came from many parts of the country to secure employment. Initially there was much bickering and fighting between these new residents but in time when the winning of coal became the main goal for all friendships where forged between the men at work or over a well earned pint in the club after work. Manton was initially separate from Worksop but was eventually joined to the town when the council estates where built in the 1950s and 1960s.

The Manton Community Alliance, founded in 2004, is an award winning round two Government Neighbourhood Management Pathfinder. Its aim is to promote informed collective action of service providers and residents so that services are improved and residents have real influence in the development of their own neighbourhood.

The Alliance works very closely with the Neighbourhood Policing Team.

Under the Policing Pledge, this is an urban beat and has a 15 minute emergency response time. For an explanation of what this means click here.

Beat Update

Update May 2012

Arsons remain a current problem within the Manton beat area, vehicles are being set alight from the front number plate. A reward of up to £1000 has been offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. We are urging the public to come forward with any information in relation to the arsons, the information can be provided by contacting us on 101 or through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

There has been an increase in calls regarding anti-social behaviour at Lanchester Gardens in Manton over the previous month, these have been in relation to vandalism, criminal damage and, more alarmingly, fires, which have been deliberately started. The team would like to express the dangers of setting fires in communal areas and outside peoples flats; Lanchester Gardens is private property and unless you live there or are visiting someone at an address then people should not be accessing the communal areas. We would express to parents to tell their children not to go into such areas and should not cause criminal damage or set fires. Any one caught inside the building causing criminal damage or setting fires will be dealt with in a robust manner and may face prosecution.

Due to the current value of scrap metal, the Manton area is experiencing a high number of metal thefts, including bikes and other objects being left on view and in easy reach on driveways and gardens. Sheds and garages are also being targeted so please make sure these are secure and consider investing in a shed alarm which acts as a deterrent. We would like to encourage you to keep your valuables safe and make sure they are secure and out of sight wherever possible.

You, the public, are our eyes and ears. We cannot do our job effectively without your help.

Thank you for your support by filling out the Neighbourhood Priority Survey, via the below link. Please keep completing so that you can update us as to what your current issues are. The results of these are used to set our priorities every 3 months, so they are very important.

We offer the following advice in order to keep your property and valuables safe:

As the nights now draw in early, we would ask all residents to be aware of security.

Some simple steps that can be taken include:

At home

• Use strong locks on all external doors and easy to reach windows - such as those on the ground floor, above flat roofs or near drainpipes
• Don’t hang keys where they could easily be reached through a letterbox or window and never leave them on a sideboard where they are visible
• Keep valuable items away from windows where they could be seen by passers-by. This includes home computers and television sets
• Close the curtains when it becomes dark to prevent people looking in to your property.
• Think about using time switches so that you property inside is always lit up at various times especially with the darker nights.

Garages and sheds

• Try to keep your garage door open only for as long as is necessary. If thieves can see there is something worth stealing from a garage they could come back later and break in
• As with items in your home, valuables stored in either a shed or a garage should be marked with your postcode and house number so if they are stolen and recovered you can be traced and reunited with your property
• Large expensive equipment, like lawn mowers, should be fastened to something bulky. Alternatively, fit anchor posts attached to the floor to provide a fixed point for locking your belongings to

Vehicles

• Don’t leave windows and roofs open on vehicles while they are unattended
• When leaving your vehicle make sure there is nothing on show
• If you have a satellite navigation (SatNav) system in your car remove it when you leave your vehicle and wipe away sucker marks from your windscreen

www.immobilise.com is a national property website where you can register all of your belongings.

Please be vigilant, if it is an emergency dial 999 or 101 in a non emergency situation. You can also give information anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111
