Ashfield North
Not only one of the largest Neighbourhood Policing Areas in the county, Ashfield North is also one of the busiest outside the city of Nottingham.
The Neighbourhood Policing Area incorporates the former coalfield towns of Sutton-in-Ashfield and Kirkby-in-Ashfield, nearby Huthwaite, Stanton Hill, Teversal, Woodhouse and the rural parish of Annesley.
Ashfield North is currently divided into 10 beats each with their own named Beat Managers and Police Community Support Officers offering visible and effective policing.
Key priorities across the Neighbourhood Policing Area continue to be house burglary, auto-crime and violent crime. Anti-social behaviour and other issues affecting local communities are also very high on our agenda.
Neighbourhood Priorities
Through consultation with the members of the public in this neighbourhood we regularly set out a number of priorities to be tackled.
- Antisocial behaviour - Asda site in Sutton occupied by Asda, McDonalds, KFC and a number of car parks Show details
On consultation with the chairs/vice chairs of the safer neighbourhoods committees covering Sutton and Kirkby in Ashfield, coupled with numerous completed survey forms, antisocial behaviour at the above location was highlighted as a priority.
Our Response
We will:
Identify, via intelligence led policing, premises where alcohol is being bought by under age purchasers or by adults on behalf of those under-age i.e proxy purchasing.
Use Crime Stoppers, particularly Junior Crime Stoppers to encourage intelligence as to where alcohol is being sold and/or supplied to under-age persons.
Where such premises are identified, task Trading Standards to perform a test purchase operation in that and other similar premises in the area
Where there is evidence of proxy purchasing to mount an observation operation to catch offenders and deal with them by way of fixed penalty ticket using members of the Special Constabulary and the Safer Neighbourhood Team
Engage the Divisional Licensing Officer to conduct spot visits to all off-licensed premises and reaffirm the robust nature of enforcement surrounding sales to the under-aged and younger adults (Challenge 23)
Link in with Operation Animism (an operation specifically designed to target vulnerable areas at peak identfied times regarding anti-social behaviour) to highlight the identified locations as priority areas for officers on Anti-Social Behaviour patrols on Friday and Saturday evenings.
Task the Youth Issues Officers to highlight this problem in Secondary Schools in Mansfield via school assemblies and the Safer Schools Notice Boards
Maximise media opportunities to keep you informed of what has been done, and where you can help us.
Ensure the location in question recieve scrutiny at partnership local area tasking and co-oridation meetings, to ensure partner agencies understand and assist where it is within their role to do so e.g. Ashfield District Council Community Protection officers patrol the area's in question at the right time, Youth Services look at diversionary activities for local young people.

Update May 2010:
Berry Av area - this area saw sustained partnership activity prior to this priority being set, including action and clean-up days, which resulted in reductions in the number of incidents. Partner agencies are still working with the residents of the area to further reduce offending and increase confidence. At the recent meeting of the Kirkby Safer neighbourhoods committees chairs/vice-chairs, it was requested this area still be subject to the enhanced pledge compliance scrutiny. This will be reviewed as has been described under the pending local area priority review.
Warwick Close and Walesby Drive in Kirkby-in-Ashfield - partner agencies and the police have continued to proactively pursue and deter offening in this area. Partnership consultation has also been extensive around future plans for this location - this is ongoing.
We conduct patrols with partner agencies, including Ashfield District Council, Youth Services and other organisations, at times when we receive most reports of antisocial behaviour. We take positive steps to deal with incidents reported to us and tackle the people responsible. We consult with our communities regularly to ask for feedback and opinions. We also keep people informed about the work we are doing through Safer Neighbourhood Committee meetings and the media.
