The Kirkby Central Beat is a community of approximately 6,215 people and approximately 2,628 households. The beat stretches from the road known as Kingsway, as far as the boundary with Annesley Woodhouse and then back towards 'old Kirkby'. There are also three well known recreation areas known as Portland Park, Kingsway Park and Titchfield Park.

There are a number of schools and places of worship. The arterial routes of Kingsway, Urban Road and Victoria Road cross the beat. Interestingly, the local Police Station is also situated within the beat.

Beat Priorities

Through consultation with the members of the public in this beat we regularly set out a number of priorities to be tackled.

  • Rowdy nuisance behaviour Show details
    It has been identified that general ASB issues surround the following areas:rear of Orchard road, Kingsway, Kingsway Cemetary, Kingsway Park and Half Moon Drive.

    Our Response
    Update June/July 2010- High visibility patrols in the locality have continued by the local beat officers.
    Community Protection Officer, Michelle Lawson has recently joined the team and has also been regularly patrolling the hotspot areas.
    Both beat officers have been holding regular meetings with staff from Ashfield District Council in relation to issues on Kingsway Park. Approximately every 3 months, officers from Ashfield District Council and Youth Services attend Kirkby Police Station and discuss issues on Kingsway Park.
    Various stop forms have been issued in the hotspot areas and further intervention is put in place with individuals, if necessary.
    Both beat officers have continued to liase with external agencies, such as Ashfield Homes.




    Update May 2010- High visibility patrols are ongoing in the hotspot areas by the local beat officer's and CPO's. Stop forms and fixed penalty notices are issued as appropriate. PCSO 6311 GREGG is currently gathering evidence to place a few nominals onto an Anti-Social Behaviour Contract. The beat officer's are constantly liasing with external agencies such as APAC and Ashfield Homes and joint visits are ongoing. Community re-visits are still be conducted by the local officer's and further intervention is put in place if necessary.


    Update December 2009- High visibility patrols are being conducted in the hotspot areas by the Kirkby Central beat team. Fixed penalty notices are issued as appropriate. Joint visits with Ashfield Homes have been completed. Community re-visits are being conducted, and further advise and reassurance is offered. The Community Protection Officers also patrol the above area's and feedback any information to the beat team.
  • Fly tipping Show details
    It has been identified by the Kingsway Area Safer Neighbourhood Committee that fly tipping on Grives Lane has increased.

    Our Response
    Update June/July 2010- High visibility patrols in the locality have continued by the local beat officers.
    Community Protection Officer, Michelle Lawson has recently joined the team and has also been regularly patrolling the vicinity.
    Any fly tipping in the locality is reported directly to Ashfield District Council and photographs are also obtained and forwarded on, if necessary.
    Enquiries are ongoing as to who is responsible.
    PCSO 6311 GREGG has liased with officers also at Ashfield District Council in relation to this priority.

    Update May 2010 - Ashfield District Council Neighbourhood Services have attended this location on 5 occasions since the last update, having to remove waste on each occasion. We have no information as to who is responsible, but enquiries are continuing

    Update February 2010- This has just been added as a priority. The local beat team will conduct high visibility patrols in and around the area of Grives Lane. If anyone has been flytipping in the area, then the beat team will obtain photographs and liase with the Council also in attempt to identify person(s) responsible. The Community Protection Officers are also aware of this priority and will also be conducting high visibility patrols within the area; and investigating any flytipping also.

  • Speeding traffic Show details
    It has been identified that vehicles are passing along Church Street and Kingsway at excessive speed. The problem is said to peak during the hours of 0800hrs - 1000hrs and 1600hrs - 1800hrs. This is having a negative impact on the local residents who are concerned that a serious incident will happen. There are two school crossing patrols situated on the roads of which some vehicles have failed to stop for the crossing sign due to the excessive speeds.

    Our Response
    Update June/July 2010- On 4th July 2010 PC 3092 Williamson & PC 3011 Dickson conducted a speed check operation on Church Street between 1241 hours & 1300 hours. As a result, there were 0 persons speeding within the time they were on the street.
    Also, the local beat officers have been regularly patrolling both Church Street and Kingsway during the peak times.





    Update May 2010- The local beat officer's and CPO's have continued high visibility patrols on Church Street and Kingsway, liasing with the crossing guardians in both locations. The pedestrian crossing and two speed advisory cameras have proved to be effective. The local beat officer's have also liased with Rachael Madden, County Councillor for the Kirkby Central beat ward in relation to this priority.


    Update December 2009- Over the past 6 months high visibility patrols have continued on Church Street and Kingsway, and we have patrolled with the crossing guardians in both areas. Our speed camera enforcement officer's from Kirkby have conducted numerous check points in both areas of which has resulted in numerous drivers being warned and advised. We have had a roads policing unit patrolling the Kirkby area of which has proved a positive impact on offending vehicles. A pedestrian crossing and two speed advisory cameras have been added to Victoria Road by the Highways Department to help combat speeding vehicles.

Beat Update

The Kirkby Central Beat Team have been conducting street briefings across the beat area. On 16 December 2009 the team conducted street briefings with Rachael Madden, County Councillor for Kirkby Central on Greenacres, Central Avenue, Spring Close, and Mayfield Street at various times throughout the day.

On 13 January 2010 the Kirkby Central beat officers conducted further street briefings across various streets on the Kirkby Central beat area. The beat team liased with members of the public, listened to their concerns, and conducted community surveys. The results of these surveys will be presented at a later date to their local safer neighbourhood meetings.

On 10 February 2010 further street briefings were conducted on Franderground Drive, and surrounding streets including Meadow Farm View, Castlehill Close, The Ropewalk, Carr Grove, and Kirkby Mill View. The local PCSO for the area conducted these with one of the local Community Protection Officers.

On 10 March 2010 further street briefings were conducted on Lime Tree Avenue, Lime Street, Pearl Avenue, and Half Moon Drive. The local beat officers spoke to local residents on each of these streets and conducted neighbourhood priority surveys. Each resident that was spoken to was also left with contact details for both the officers for future reference.

On 11 March 2010 PCSO 6311 GREGG, PC 2527 POWERS, and PC 2773 COOK along with a member of the Personnel Department conducted an Ambitions In Ashfield Event at The Festival Hall, Hodgkinson Road, Kirkby whereby students from secondary schools in the Ashfield area attended. At the event, students had the opportunity to speak to local officers about various issues, and students also completed neighbourhood priority surveys. In total 140 surverys were completed at the event.

On 7 April 2010 local officers conducted further street briefings on the following streets; Roseberry Street, Nest Avenue, Nest Crescent, Regent Street, Wilson Avenue, and North Street. Further neighbourhood surveys were conducted, and residents had the opportunity to engage with the local officers and discuss any issues or concerns in their neighbourhood.

On 5 May 2010 PC 2527 POWERS & CPO 10414 PAINTER conducted further street briefings on the following streets- Saint John's Avenue, Western Avenue, Beverley Drive, Ascot Close & Hammond Grove. Further neighbourhood surveys were completed with resident's.

On 3 June 2010 PCSO 6311 GREGG & CPO 10414 PAINTER conducted a community engagement event on Mayfield Street and surrounding area's. Throughout the engagement officer's liased with various resident's on the street and discussed local issues. Smartwater was also deployed at a property on Mayfield Street.

On 23 June 2010 PCSO 6311 GREGG & CPO DAWSON conducted further street briefings on Cedar Avenue, Balfour Street, and Greenholme Close. During the engagement a vehicle was stopped in the locality and a £300 fixed penalty ticket was issued to the driver for not carrying a waste license

On 30 June 2010 PCSO 6311 GREGG & PC 2527 POWERS were involved in a Jobs and Career Day at Kirkby College. Officers alongside other agencies engaged with Year 8 throughout the day and participated in various sessions.

On 21 July 2010 PCSO 8165 FICHNA & PCSO 9167 BATTERHAM conducted further street briefings on Queensway, Marion Avenue, Philip Avenue, New Street & Lime Tree Avenue. In total 106 neighbourhood surveys and letters were posted.

On 18 August 2010 PCSO 6311 GREGG conducted further street briefings on The Paddock, Beech Avenue, Crocus Street, & Bourne Avenue. PCSO 6311 GREGG liased with various residents and discussed various issues and concerns.

The Kirkby Central Beat Team also have two Safer Neighbourhood Committee's that meet up regularly and discuss local issues. One Committee cover's the ''Old Kirkby'' area and the other Committee cover's the Kingsway estate area. The beat team have recently attended both of these Committee meetings. The Kingsway area Committee have decided that flytipping on Grives Lane is an issue, and this has been added as a priority for the local officers. The other two priorities, anti-social behaviour and speeding remain the same. At the Safer Neighbourhood meetings the beat team feedback results collated from the neighbourhood surveys, and also feedback on the 3 priorities for the area.
