Beat Update

Beat Update

Can we wish all the local residents for Sutton Central a very safe and happy New Year.

On the 08/12/2011 a beat walk was carried out around the New Cross and Farndale Road area. There was nothing to report.

On 28/11/2011 an Open meeting was held at the Church on the Oval. Unfortunately we only had a few members of the public attend. The main problem raised at this meeting was Anti Social Behaviour at Saint Marys Court on the Oval. We are currently liaising with Ashfield Homes to put appropriate measures in place to try and solve the problem. We are increasing patrols in this area to locate the main culprits.

On 10/11/2011 a Beat walk was held on Mansfield Road (Corner of New Cross), along Dalestorth Street and Redcliffe Street with nothing to report.

On 14/10/2011 we held a beat walk along Stoneyford Road and Priestic Road with nothing to report.

On 19/09/2011we held a local open meeting for all residents in the nearby vacinaty to attend at the Church on the Oval. There was nothing new to report from the meeting.

On 08/09/2011 we carried out a Beat Walk from 1000 hours for 2 hours. We walked along Stanton Crescent, Northwood Avenue, Southwood Avenue and around the Oval area. Local residents commented that there is a large number of kids hanging around the Local For U shop that corners Carsic Road and Northwood Avenue. We have had an increase in Anti Social Behaviour in this area. The local Beat Teams have increased the patrols at relevent times to put a stop to the problem.

We are receiving an increase in calls regarding a suspicious male hanging around schools in the area. If you do see anything you wish to report to the Police then please call 101 or 999 in an emergency.

09/08/2011- The beat walk for the Westbourne Road area had been cancelled due to National Riots taking place across the country. Local officers were offering reassurance to the city due to ongoing Rioting issues locally and nationally.

On the 08/08/2011 we held a Safer Neighbourhood Committee meting at Sutton Polioce Station. We discussed the main problems that were happening in the Carsic Estate area. These were confirmed that kids were throwing stones and eggs at random houses and vehicles in the area. The beat team are aware and are providing a visible presence where possible. We urge for the public to call with any descriptions of any persons acting in this manner. We have had reports about concerns of a homeless person sleeping rough on the Carsic Estate area. The Police are aware of this and again urge peple to call if they have any concerns themselves. We have also been notifid that the Sutton Town Social Club on Davies Ave in Sutton will stop trading as of the 28/08/2011. We wish Martin well with his new career path. The Open meetings are now being held at the Church on the Oval at new dates and times. Please check the website for an up to date agenda of this.

On Tuesday 21/06/2011 we held a Safer Neighbourhood Committee meeting at Sutton Police Station. We discussed our main hotspots for the area. Our next Open Meeting is on the 21/09/2011 at Sutton Ground Ground Social Club starting at 1830 for approximately one hour. Anyone is welcome to come along and share ideas for the local area. If you live in the Carsic Estate area and would like to help deliver leaflets to advertise the future events for the neighbourhood please can you contact PCSO 9335 Pickersgill directly on T07889 702855.

21/06/2011- Beatwalk update for Percival Crescent and surrounding areasproved there is no outstanding issues. Comments were made that residents who live on the alleyways are allowing their shrubbery to overgrow which is causing some people an obstruction. Parking is still a problem on Westbourne Road when school is out and we have increased our foot patrols in the area at this time.

15/06/2011- Press release in the Chad relating to the ongoing problems of vehicle nuisance on Willowbridge Lane. Warning letters will be issued to drivers using Willowbridge Lane as a cut through in the near future.

14/05/2011 - Two offenders have now been dealt with in relation to an incident on 23/04/2011 where damage was caused to property in the Clumber Street location. One offender received a reprimand and the other was charged with 11 offences.
Anti Social Behaviour patrols have been conducted in the area around The Oval and 3 local youths have been spoken to and warned about their behaviour.

Willowbridge Lane still remains a priority for the Sutton Central (Carsic) area. An operation is in place and will be conducted on a regular basis to offer warnings. We plan to stop vehicles and point out that this is an access road only and will offer tickets if appropriate.

On Thursday 14/04/2011 we held a Safer Neighbourhood Committee meeting at Sutton Police Station. We discussed our priorities for the area and the website has been updated accordingly. On Friday the 18/03/2011 the speed gun was in force on Willowbridge Lane to establish problems with speeding in the area and drivers using the lane as a cut through road. The process was a sucess and within an hour this proved 44 cars passed through the Willowbridge Lane and only 5 cars were visiting or residing on the lane. There was no speeding fines issued at the time but the process will be repeated at a future date.

On Monday the 21st of February 2011 at 3pm a meeting was held by the Sutton Central Safer Neighbourhood Committee. At the meeting, local issues were discussed. The local Beat Team will now be looking into parking issues on Priestic Road and off road motorbikes on The Oval.

CRIME PREVENTION.

SMARTWATER.
Smartwater is a way of marking any item in your home, each phial of liquid has a unique code and when registered with Smartwater HQ it links all of the items marked, to your address.
In the last year, all of the properties that have been burgled on the Sutton Central Beat have been revisited, and smartwater applied.

YOUR HOME.
Contrary to popular belief, most domestic burglaries are committed by ‘opportunist’ thieves looking for the easiest way into your home without being seen or disturbed. Often these are ‘spur of the moment’ decisions made when an easy target present itself such as an open window, valuables being left on view or lapses in security. Take some time to assess the security of your home and take positive action to upgrade it. By building home security into your daily routine you will greatly reduce the risk of a burglary taking place.

SNEAK IN BURGLARIES.
As many as one in five burglaries occur because windows and doors are left open! Particularly during the day. This increases in the summer months to one in three.
· Always keep your doors and windows secure even when you are in
· Don’t leave valuables near the door
· Make sure you keep your keys, including car keys, handy but out of sight
· Use door chains where fitted
Genuine callers will knock, wait, have identification and will usually be known to you.

ARE YOU IN?
Try to make your home look occupied while you are out. Invest in plug in timers for lamps and radios. Tune your radio to a station that has mostly talking.

WINDOWS.
One in three burglars get in through a back window. Window locks that can be seen may prevent or deter a burglar from forcing the window, because having to break glass increases the risk of attracting attention. Window locks are inexpensive and can be purchased from DIY stores and fitted easily. Remember to remove the keys from locked windows and keep them in a safe place out of sight.

BURGLAR ALARMS.
Have a look at your neighbour’s houses. If they have alarms and you do not, then you need one. An intruder alarm installed and used properly can deter burglars.

An alarm is not a substitute for installing and using good quality locks and bolts.

ALWAYS set your alarm when leaving the property or going to bed.

MAIN DOORS.
All exterior wooden doors should be fitted with at least a five-lever mortise lock. Locks however are only as good as the door and frame so make sure they are in good condition. Patio doors and French widows should have top and bottom bolts.

KEYS.
Some burglaries and car thefts are committed after keys are hooked through letterboxes and windows. Remember to keep your keys in a safe place, out of sight and well away from doors and windows

GOING ON HOLIDAY.
Cancel any deliveries of newspapers or milk. If possible get a neighbour or friend to open and close curtains and remove mail out of sight. Remember to use lamps on timer switches when it is dark.

OUTSIDE YOUR HOME.

PERIMITER SECURITY.
Don’t let your garden provide cover for the burglar. Hedges or fences at the front of your home should be limited to 1 metre in height. At the rear, hedges, fences, or walls should be 1.8 metres high. Gates should be the same height and padlocked. You can further deter a burglar climbing into your property by placing a trellis along the top of your fence or plant prickly or thorny bushes, such as berberis or roses alongside the fence.

LIGHTING.
Fit security lights. These can be floodlights controlled by passive infra red (PIR) detectors that activate when they see movement. Low wattage lights controlled by ‘dusk to dawn’ sensors stay on all night and can cost as little as 1p per night in electricity.

GARDENS.
Gardens should be clear of anything that the burglar might use to break into your home. Clear away gardening tools when you have finished. Move ladders, tables, chairs, wheelie bins or chain and padlock them to a strong anchorage point. Security mark expensive items you leave in your garden.

GARDEN SHEDS AND GARAGES.
Fit good quality close-shackled padlocks to doors and keep them locked. Add reinforcements to doors and windows including grilles. Consider wiring a shed or garage to your house burglar alarm system.

GOOD NEIGHBOURING.
If you see anyone acting suspiciously, call the police. Make a note of any vehicle registration numbers, the description of the person and the time.
