Beat Update
May 2012
April has seen the Forest Town Community Council members and Local Police Team meet to decide upon a new Policing Priority for Forest Town. This will not mean other areas or issues are neglected, however it has been collectively decided that the Local Police team should now focus efforts on vehicles speeding on Old Mill Lane, New Mill Lane, Pump Hollow Road and Clipstone Road West.
Operation Animism - the dedicated anti-social behaviour patrol car is still running on Friday and Saturday evenings, and will continue to cover the anti-social behaviour ‘hot spots’.
Unfortunately during the month of April a number of incidents of Criminal damage have occurred at both Holly Primary School and Forest Town Primary School, primarily in the evenings out of school hours. The beat team are endeavouring to ensure such incidents are prevented and reduced with extra patrols and working closely with the Heads of each school to implement any preventative measures. However, as always should anyone witness people committing such acts then please call and tell us immediately.
Operation Lighter Nights is also ongoing - targeting shed breaks and thefts from gardens. Sheds are often targeted by thieves because they are not designed to store valuable equipment and property - they were originally designed to house potting plants. Their fairly flimsy construction makes them easy to break into via the door, windows, walls or even the roof. However, many homes have little outside storage space, so the shed inevitably becomes a place for storing items that are not wanted indoors. We are working hard to prevent criminals from targeting sheds and properties, but you can play your part in making sure it is as difficult as possible for them.
Shed door security
Fit a tough pad bar (also called hasp and staple) secured with coach bolts and a strong padlock to the shed door.
Replace standard hinges with strap hinges secured by coach bolts or use security screws on existing hinges.
Internal security
Fit a battery-operated shed alarm.
Chain tools, cycles and other valuable equipment together or to a ground anchor using a high security chain or cable and a good quality padlock. This is the most effective way of securing property in a shed as long as the chain and padlock are strong enough.
Have you marked the contents of your shed? Make a note of serial numbers and take a photograph of your items.
Register them at www.immobilise.com so police can prove they are yours if they are stolen and later recovered.
Consider using security marking systems such as Selectamark or SmartWater.
Shed window
It is better not to fit windows to sheds. However, if yours has a window, fit a window grille and/or a frosted window film to stop a potential thief seeing what’s inside your shed.
Garden security
Install outside security lighting operated by either movement sensor or photo electric cell (Dusk till Dawn light) to the garden area, giving coverage to the shed.
Secure the access to your shed and garden by locking gates and using thorny bushes next to walls and fences to prevent climbing.
Remember to secure gardening tools and equipment as they could be used by a criminal to break into your home.
Don’t leave ladders easily accessible outside. Chain them up to a secure point with a strong chain and padlock.
Make sure the shed is secure on its base. Use coach bolts or similar to secure
The Beat Team are pleased to inform you that during the month on April there have been NO reports of vehicle crime at all on Forest Town West. However when comparing April 2012 to April 2011, unfortunately the figures show that all reported crime is UP by 8%. This believed to be primarily due to the reports of criminal damage at two of the Primary Schools in the area.
April 2012
The Beat team and Operation Metallica conducted a pro-active ‘week of action’ starting Monday 5th March. This Operation actively sought to stop/check any scrap vehicles in order to ascertain whether they are genuine and hold the correct licences. So far this has seen some positive results with a number of arrests and vehicles being seized across the force. Of course, should anyone have any information regarding possible offenders or general information that may help us, please contact one of the Local Police Beat Team direct or call 101
Operation Accelerate is still ongoing. This Operation dedicates Beat Team members through the week to conduct regular patrols and ‘walk-throughs’ of all the local supermarkets in an effort to reduce shop theft. In addition to this Pcso’s are also currently allocated for a 2 hour period every Saturday and Sunday to be visible and available within the Forest Town Asda.
Operation Animism - the dedicated anti-social behaviour patrol car is also still running on Friday and Saturday evenings, and will continue to cover the anti-social behaviour ‘hot spots’. This of course includes various areas within Forest Town, including the new Forest Town policing priority on the Avenues.

For the crime recording year 1st April 2011 to 31st March 2012, there was an increase in crimes reported of 0.9%. this relates to three extra crimes. On a more positive note, House burglary reduced by 64% with only 9 offences occurring over the year. Calls regarding anti-social behaviour also reduced by 10.8%
March 2012
Following on from the meeting held with the Forest Town Community Council on the 17th January, the Policing Priority for the Forest Town area continues to be Anti-Social behaviour on the Avenues. However, regular patrols continue to be conducted around the Garibaldi shops.
Operation Accelerate is also still ongoing. This Operation dedicates Beat Team members through the week to conduct regular patrols and ‘walk-throughs’ of all the local supermarkets in an effort to reduce shop theft. In addition to this Pcsos are also currently allocated for a 2 hour period every Saturday and Sunday to be visible and available within the Forest Town Asda.

Local residents with concerns about scrap metal collectors and theft of scrap metal in and around the Forest Town area can be assured that such activity is still being monitored. The beat team and Operation Metallica will be conducting a pro-active ‘week of action’ commencing Monday 5th March and will be actively seeking to stop/check any scrap vehicles in order to ascertain whether they are genuine and hold the correct licences. Of course, should anyone have any information regarding possible offenders or general information that may help us, please contact one of the Local Police Beat Team direct or call 101
The beat team are pleased to inform you that from the 1st of April 2011 to February 2012 reports of burglary are DOWN by 59%, Criminal damage DOWN by 23% and reports of violence are DOWN by 30% when compared to the same period the previous year. Unfortunately the same figures also show that reports of Theft are currently UP by 32%, however, this is primarily due to the spate of metal thefts experienced in the area over the summer months which are now not such an issue with reports significantly reduced.
