Beat Update
GENERAL INFORMATION FOR RESIDENTS
The way the Ladybrook Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) operates has recently changed. There will now be a member of the local SNT available to deal with your call seven days a week. However, to facilitate the change it may be that the previous dedicated Ladybrook team of PC 2479 Hardy and PCSO 4729 Bull will not respond to your initial call or enquiry. Both Simon and Craig now form part of the West Mansfield Safer Neighbourhood Team that are responsible for covering the Police beats known as Sherwood, Bull Farm and Pleasley, Ladybrook, Grange Farm, Cumberland and Broomhill. These beats are aligned with the pre 1st May 2011 Mansfield District Council wards. The team consists of four Constables, PC 3010 Ian Dickson, PC 809 Chris Buxton, PC 2479 Simon Hardy, PC 831 Marcus Tierney and six Police Community Support Officers (PCSO) 4722 Stevie Willetts, 7792 Shelley Reynolds, 7321 Donna Ward, 8153 Mike Cartwright, 8180 Romek Kordecki and 4729 Craig Bull.
Although Simon and Craig will retain overall responsibility for the Ladybrook beat, it may be that one of the other team members will contact you initially if Simon and Craig are on rest days or leave. Likewise, they may be required to spend time dealing with issues on the other beats within the “ West Mansfield cluster” in the absence of their team members that are primarily responsible for covering them.
March 2012.
It’s been a fairly busy time for us, especially with the Christmas and New Year period now behind us. Traditionally at this time of the year crime rises, with the number of burglaries and thefts going up significantly. However, this year we’ve run a number of operations that have really made a difference and as a result we’ve managed to stem this seasonal increase.
Operation Darker Nights which targeted issues such as burglary and vehicle crime has been a great success. This involved officers on patrol paying attention to any vehicles and premises with an insecurity that would make it easy for potential offenders. Such things as items of value left on display in vehicles and unlocked doors and windows were pointed out to the owners immediately so that they could take action.
Operation Accelerate also showed some fantastic results. This targeted retail premises and anti social behavior hotspots throughout the area and ensured that foot patrols and walkthroughs of stores took place on a nightly basis.
With the spring months now approaching, thefts from sheds and outbuildings traditionally rise. Lawn mowers, power tools and other expensive gardening equipment are the burglars preferred target, but you can take some simple precautions to help prevent you from becoming a victim. If at all possible don’t leave expensive items in a shed, particularly if they are easy to carry away. If you can take power tools into the house, do so or leave them in a garage which can be locked. Don’t leave bicycles in sheds as they are particularly sought after and easy to sell.
Shed alarms are a good idea and can be bought quite cheaply from most DIY stores. Most are easily fitted by a person with even the most basic DIY skills. And finally, invest in a good padlock for the door. It may not stop a determined thief, but a good lock is a deterrent and may just make the burglar think twice.
I’ve also included some more good advice for general use about the home and car. Follow this advice and you’ll go a long way in preventing yourself from becoming a victim of crime.
• Don't leave items on display, remove valuables and wipe away sat nav marks
• Always lock your vehicle, and don’t forget the boot and windows
• When you’re out and about, always try and park in a secure attended car park,
• When parking at home, use your garage if you have one and lock garden gates. If you park on the street, try to leave your car in a well-lit area or near a CCTV camera
• Fit an immobiliser or an alarm, and use a steering lock to deter criminals.
• Consider buying anti-theft screws for your number plate and attach lockable wheel nuts to help prevent wheels from being stolen
• Have your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) etched on windows, windscreens and headlamps
There has recently been an increase in Dwelling House Burglary offences in your area. Many of these burglaries could have been prevented. Please ensure that you follow the crime prevention advice below, in order to ensure that you are protected from being a victim of future burglaries. If this advice is followed, it will significantly reduce the likelihood of you becoming a burglary victim.
CHECK THAT DOORS AND WINDOWS ARE LOCKED
In the last month over 45% of Burglaries in the Mansfield area have been committed by offenders entering addresses through insecure doors and windows. Burglaries occur at all times of the day and night, and often occur through insecure doors, whist the occupants are in the house. Recently victims have had items stolen from their kitchens, whilst they are watching the TV in the room next door. DO NOT LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU. Keep your doors and windows locked at all times, including when you are in your house
BURGLAR ALARMS
If you have a burglar alarm installed at you address, please use it. Often Police Officers revisit victims of Burglary to find that they have not used their alarms. Alarms are a very effective method of deterring burglars. If you hear a neighbours alarm activating please investigate the matter or contact the Police. Occasionally Alarms have activated and no-one has reacted to the activation. IF YOUR ALARM ACTIVATE WOULD YOU WANT SOMEONE TO RESPOND TO IT?
CCTV
If you have CCTV cameras installed at your address, ensure that it working correctly and that you know how to use it. Often Police visit addresses that have CCTV footage only to find that potential evidence has been lost as the systems do not work or the owners do not know how to work them
GATES AND FENCES
Ensure that gates are secure and locked, and that fences are not easy to climb over. Burglars look for easy opportunities to commit crimes. Often a locked gate can stop them from entering your garden to look for further opportunities
LIGHTING
Exterior lighting is another effective method of deterring burglars. Burglars do not want witnesses to be able to identify them. Lighting increases the chances of this happening. If you have exterior lighting at your address, ensure that it is working correctly.
SUPICIOUS ACTIVITY
Police Officer always conduct enquiries at the addresses neighbouring burglary victims. It is often found that people have not reported suspicious activity to the Police as they do not wish to ‘waste our time’. It is never a waste of time to report suspicious activity to the Police. Burglars look for opportunities to commit crime, this may occur hours or days prior to the burglary occurring. If the Police are notified of this activity, there is a real opportunity to prevent it happening. PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN THE CURE
CRIMESTOPPERS
People often choose not to report matters to the Police for a number of reasons, including concerns about retaliation form offenders. If you feel like this, please ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Any calls made to Crimestoppers are complexly confidential. Calls are free and you will not be asked for your name, address or telephone number.
