Beat Update
May 2012 update
Priory Beat continues to have a low number of calls in relation to anti social behaviour; there have been 4 in total, 2 at Morrisons and 2 at Yeoman Hill Park.
This remains very encouraging as the Safer Neighbourhood Team continue to pay attention to these two particular hot spot areas, along with utilising officers from Operation Animism patrols.
On another positive note during April there were no reported incidents of vehicle crime and burglary dwellings. Although crime remains low at this time we would still urge people to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the Police.
The Safer Neighbourhood Team have a number of speeding operations planned during the coming weeks and will update the website with the information from those action days.
We have recently visited St Edmunds and Northfield Schools for students to ‘Meet the Police’ day. This was well received by both students and staff. The role of the Police Officer/Police Community Support Officer was explained, advice regarding road safety given, advice given to the school council regarding bullying and help with ideas for a school poster they are currently designing.
As I am sure you are all aware there are some important events coming up including The Olympics, Euro 2012 and of course the Queens Jubilee. It is anticipated that with these main attractions there will come events at a local level. If you are thinking of having a street party or a gathering please give consideration to the area. Try and plan your event early and make sure you have contacted the relevant departments for example the local council and planning department. If in doubt please do not hesitate to contact the Safer Neighbourhood Team who will advise and help you.
April 2012 update
There has been a slight increase in anti social behaviour calls on the Priory Beat which is not unusual as the weather improves and the nights are lighter. This is mainly around the bowling green area of Yeoman Hill Park where youths are playing football and climbing on the pavilion roof. The SNT are concentrating on the area and will deal with any youths involved in this behaviour.
The Safer Neighbourhood Team has been active out on the roads over the last week on a road safety operation. This operation utilises officers to target drivers with no seatbelts, using mobile phones whilst driving and speeding some of the main reasons for accidents and road deaths. All in all, a total of 8 fixed penalty tickets were issued, 6 for speeding, 1 for not wearing seatbelts and 1 for the use of a mobile phone whilst driving.
A further drugs warrant was executed at an address on Yorke Street, Mansfield Woodhouse which resulted in the arrest of one person in possession of a controlled substance. It is also anticipated further drugs warrants will be executed in the very near future. We would ask that residents continue to be vigilant and if they see any suspicious activity to report this to the Police in confidence or alternatively Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Crime is currently down 23% for the year. A full update of crime figures will be given when the complete end of year figures are available.
Operation Lighter Nights has now begun which targets shed breaks and thefts from gardens. Sheds are often targeted by thieves because they are not designed to store valuable equipment and property - they were originally designed to house potting plants. Their fairly flimsy construction makes them easy to break into via the door, windows, walls or even the roof. However, many homes have little outside storage space, so the shed inevitably becomes a place for storing items that are not wanted indoors. We are working hard to prevent criminals from targeting sheds and properties, but you can play your part in making sure it is as difficult as possible for them.
Shed door security
Fit a tough pad bar (also called hasp and staple) secured with coach bolts and a strong padlock to the shed door.
Replace standard hinges with strap hinges secured by coach bolts or use security screws on existing hinges.
Internal security
Fit a battery-operated shed alarm.
Chain tools, cycles and other valuable equipment together or to a ground anchor using a high security chain or cable and a good quality padlock. This is the most effec¬tive way of securing property in a shed as long as the chain and padlock are strong enough.
Have you marked the contents of your shed? Make a note of serial numbers and take a photograph of your items.
Register them at www.immobilise.com so police can prove they are yours if they are stolen and later recovered.
Consider using security marking systems such as Selectamark or SmartWater.
Shed window
It is better not to fit windows to sheds. How¬ever, if yours has a window, fit a window grille and/or a frosted window film to stop a potential thief seeing what’s inside your shed.
Garden security
Install outside security lighting operated by either movement sensor or photo electric cell (Dusk till Dawn light) to the garden area, giving coverage to the shed.
Secure the access to your shed and gar¬den by locking gates and using thorny bushes next to walls and fences to prevent climbing.
Remember to secure gardening tools and equipment as they could be used by a criminal to break into your home.
Don’t leave ladders easily accessible out¬side. Chain them up to a secure point with a strong chain and padlock.
Make sure the shed is secure on its base. Use coach bolts or similar to secure
March update
Anti social behaviour calls continue to be low on the Priory Beat which has led to another encouraging month on the area. We would like to reiterate our comments last month that this continues to be very positive as it suggests that there are no major problems with anti-social behaviour at present. However, we are well aware that residents will often put up with ongoing problems for many months, worried that they do not want to bother the Police with minor matters. Please be assured that we do want to know about all problems, as what may seem minor can have a long term detrimental effect on the whole community.

February update
It has been another encouraging month on the Priory Beat. We are pleased to inform you that anti-social behaviour calls have been low. Crime Statistics for the last month as compared to this time last year are as follows:
All crime is down by 19.9%
Vehicle crime is down by 56.8%
Criminal Damage is down by 31.3%
Burglary other is down by 29.7%
Unfortunately there has been a slight increase in burglary dwellings (4 in the last 3 months). To reduce the chances of becoming victims of burglary please take time to note and follow the simple crime prevention advice below. Simple steps can make a big difference to keeping your property safe:
Check all windows and doors are locked, keep them secure even when you are in the property, some burglars are opportunist, will try doors as they pass and simply walk in and take unattended items of value
If possible, install a burglar alarm
If you have a gate keep it locked to prevent anyone entering your garden to gain access to the rear of your property. Have fences that are not easy to climb over.
Install exterior lights which are another effective way to deter burglars as they wish to remain anonymous and do not want witnesses to identify them. Good lighting increases the chances of this.
In the darker months when you leave your property perhaps leave a light on or the television/radio on.
Finally, we would like to tell you about another way to keep in touch with the Police, particularly if you have access to e-mail, is to sign up for our Neighbourhood Alert system. This is a free service where you can receive message alerts about crime trends, suspicious incidents, local meetings etc. You can also send messages to your local police to report problems or suspicious activity.
You can register online at www.nottinghamshirealert.co.uk, come to the station and fill in a form or ring PCSO Karen Pride who will be happy to visit your address and help sign you up.
January update
We would like to start by wishing everyone a Happy New Year and hope that you all had an enjoyable and safe Christmas.
PCSO Karen Pride has now returned to the Priory Beat having finished her attachment to Targeted Support Services. This has provided her with further knowledge of different agencies and what help they are able to provide in particular to young people and their families.
During December officers were involved in Operation Accelerate and Operation Darker Nights. Both of these operations had a positive impact on the area and helped to reduce crime and anti social behaviour.
Operation Accelerate targeted retail premises and anti social behaviour hotspots throughout and ensured patrols of the area and walkthrough of stores on a nightly basis.
Operation Darker Nights involved officers on routine patrol to pay particular attention to vehicles and premises in relation to any insecurity which would make it easy for potential offenders. Those insecurities included any visible items of value in vehicles, unlocked doors and windows of premises etc. Any such insecurity was pointed out to owners and suitable crime prevention advice offered at the time.
BURGLARY ALERT
There has recently been an increase in Dwelling House Burglary offences. Many of these burglaries could have been prevented. Please ensure that you follow the crime prevention advice below, in order to ensure that you are protected from being a victim of future burglaries. If this advice is followed, it will significantly reduce the likelihood of you becoming a burglary victim.
CHECK THAT DOORS AND WINDOWS ARE LOCKED
Burglaries in the Mansfield area are committed by offenders entering addresses through insecure doors and windows. Burglaries occur at all times of the day and night, and often occur through insecure doors, whist the occupants are in the house. Victims have had items stolen from their kitchens, whilst they are watching the TV in the room next door. DO NOT LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU. Keep your doors and windows locked at all times, including when you are in your house
BURGLAR ALARMS
If you have a burglar alarm installed at you address, please use it. Often Police Officers revisit victims of Burglary to find that they have not used their alarms. Alarms are a very effective method of deterring burglars. If you hear a neighbours alarm activating please investigate the matter or contact the Police. Occasionally Alarms have activated and no-one has reacted to the activation. IF YOUR ALARM ACTIVATE WOULD YOU WANT SOMEONE TO RESPOND TO IT?
CCTV
If you have CCTV cameras installed at your address, ensure that it working correctly and that you know how to use it. Often Police visit addresses that have CCTV footage only to find that potential evidence has been lost as the systems do not work or the owners do not know how to work them
GATES AND FENCES
Ensure that gates are secure and locked, and that fences are not easy to climb over. Burglars look for easy opportunities to commit crimes. Often a locked gate can stop them from entering your garden to look for further opportunities
LIGHTING
Exterior lighting is another effective method of deterring burglars. Burglars do not want witnesses to be able to identify them. Lighting increases the chances of this happening. If you have exterior lighting at your address, ensure that it is working correctly.
SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY
Police Officer always conduct enquiries at the addresses neighbouring burglary victims. It is often found that people have not reported suspicious activity to the Police as they do not wish to ‘waste our time’. It is never a waste of time to report suspicious activity to the Police. Burglars look for opportunities to commit crime, this may occur hours or days prior to the burglary occurring. If the Police are notified of this activity, there is a real opportunity to prevent it happening. PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE
CRIMESTOPPERS
People often choose not to report matters to the Police for a number of reasons, including concerns about retaliation form offenders. If you feel like this, please ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Any calls made to Crimestoppers are complexly confidential. Calls are free and you will not be asked for your name, address or telephone number.
PLEASE AVOID BECOMING A VICTIM OF BURGLARY
