Beat Update

May 2012 update

We are pleased to let you know that in the crime recording year 1st April 2011 to 31st March 2012, total reported crime reduced by 12.7%. Partucularly pleasing was the reduction of 64% in house burglaries and 57% reduction in vehicle related crimes.

So far this year, April 2012 saw 38% fewer offences reported than April 2011.

Yet again this month another vehicle has been taken off a motorist for not having a valid Vehicle Excise Licence. There is no excuse, if your vehicle is not taxed and you use it on the road and we see it you will lose it. We have also confiscated an off road motorcycle which was being used on the road. This has since been crushed.
Speeding is also still an issue in the area and we will be out and about with the speed gun again this month.
We have been informed of a firm going round the area offering to check to see if you are eligible for re-banding of your council tax. They charge a fee of £175 but there is no guarantee of any re-banding, they only check for you. The good news is that you can do this check for yourself, on line, completely free. We suggest that if this firm contact you, you politely but firmly show them the door.
The Beat Team attended Northfield school as part of the school’s community week programme. We took the mobile police station along for a change from the patrol car we normally take and the pupils seemed to enjoy the day looking round the station and trying on uniforms. We then had a really good question and answer session.
On Wednesday 23rd May at 1500hrs at Robin Hood School we have organised an inter schools football tournament. The schools involved are, Robin Hood, Northfield, Leas Park and Ethel Wainwright. The schools have had a coaching session from PCSO Romek Kordecki who is an FA qualified coach so we are expecting great things on final day. Please come along and support your child or grandchild in this inaugural competition.

April 2012 update.

Local residents have once again raised concerns about speeding vehicles in the area. PC Walters and PC Colley conducted a speed gun operation earlier this week and 6 motorists were caught exceeding the speed limit. One offender was doing 51 mph in a 30mph limit, and unfortunately 7 of the 8 offenders were local. Please keep your speed down especially around school opening and closing times, offenders will be prosecuted.
Lighter nights are now upon us and more garden sheds are full of expensive gardening equipment as mowers, strimmers and hedge cutters etc: are once again being used. Please make sure your shed has a good quality lock fitted along with hinges fitted with coach bolts or other security hinges. The ones supplied with sheds are often cheaply made and easily broken off or even just unscrewed. Also think about fitting a security light especially a motion sensor type. The harder you make it for a thief to get in the more chance you have of keeping your property, We now have a security marking system in place and if you require any equipment marking please give us a call and we will pop round to your home and do it there and then. If you are unfortunate enough to be a victim of a shed break afterwards, it at least gives us a chance to return your property if it is found.

Whilst on the subject of security, we have had several cars entered on people’s driveways and items stolen from within. Please make sure you always lock your car and put the alarm on if one is fitted. It only takes a thief a second to enter an unlocked vehicle and steal from within.
I have mentioned this before but a reminder may save someone from being the victim of a burglary. Next time you arrive home pretend you haven’t got your key and see if you can get into your property; if you can, a burglar can.
Overall, crime figures continue to fall across the area and once we get the year ending figures we will publish them on the web page and in the newsletters.
Finally we are holding a schools football competition at Robin Hood School on Wednesday 23rd May at 3 o’clock. Four local schools are involved in a “round robin” tournament so please come along and give these young children your support.

March update

In response to the recent concerns from residents about speeding in the area, the Beat team have recently carried out a day of action to target drivers who are speeding, not wearing seatbelts or using mobile phones while driving. A total of 7 fixed penalty tickets were issued for speeding and 1 for not wearing a seatbelt. Unfortunately 7 out of the 8 tickets were issued to people who live locally. The Beat team will be carrying out further action days in the next month.
Officers have also seized a motorcycle whose rider had no licence and seized 3 further vehicles for having no vehicle excise licence.

You may have noticed the new double yellow lines in Woodhouse. Please note, that particularly on Rose Lane outside the Police station, the parking restrictions also apply to cars parked fully on the pavements. Please also make sure you observe the residents only parking restrictions as you may also receive a fine if you park there without a permit.

BURGLARY ALERT
There has recently been an increase in Dwelling House Burglary offences. Many of these burglaries could have been prevented. Please ensure that you follow the crime prevention advice below, in order to ensure that you are protected from being a victim of future burglaries. If this advice is followed, it will significantly reduce the likelihood of you becoming a burglary victim.
CHECK THAT DOORS AND WINDOWS ARE LOCKED
Burglaries in the Mansfield area are committed by offenders entering addresses through insecure doors and windows. Burglaries occur at all times of the day and night, and often occur through insecure doors, whist the occupants are in the house. Victims have had items stolen from their kitchens, whilst they are watching the TV in the room next door. DO NOT LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU. Keep your doors and windows locked at all times, including when you are in your house
BURGLAR ALARMS
If you have a burglar alarm installed at you address, please use it. Often Police Officers revisit victims of Burglary to find that they have not used their alarms. Alarms are a very effective method of deterring burglars. If you hear a neighbours alarm activating please investigate the matter or contact the Police. Occasionally Alarms have activated and no-one has reacted to the activation. IF YOUR ALARM ACTIVATE WOULD YOU WANT SOMEONE TO RESPOND TO IT?
CCTV
If you have CCTV cameras installed at your address, ensure that it working correctly and that you know how to use it. Often Police visit addresses that have CCTV footage only to find that potential evidence has been lost as the systems do not work or the owners do not know how to work them
GATES AND FENCES
Ensure that gates are secure and locked, and that fences are not easy to climb over. Burglars look for easy opportunities to commit crimes. Often a locked gate can stop them from entering your garden to look for further opportunities
LIGHTING
Exterior lighting is another effective method of deterring burglars. Burglars do not want witnesses to be able to identify them. Lighting increases the chances of this happening. If you have exterior lighting at your address, ensure that it is working correctly.
SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY
Police Officer always conduct enquiries at the addresses neighbouring burglary victims. It is often found that people have not reported suspicious activity to the Police as they do not wish to ‘waste our time’. It is never a waste of time to report suspicious activity to the Police. Burglars look for opportunities to commit crime, this may occur hours or days prior to the burglary occurring. If the Police are notified of this activity, there is a real opportunity to prevent it happening. PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE
CRIMESTOPPERS
People often choose not to report matters to the Police for a number of reasons, including concerns about retaliation form offenders. If you feel like this, please ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Any calls made to Crimestoppers are complexly confidential. Calls are free and you will not be asked for your name, address or telephone number.

PLEASE AVOID BECOMING A VICTIM OF BURGLARY
