Beat Update
CURRENT UPDATE AUGUST 2010
In general Beechdale has a lower rate of reported crime than many of its neighbouring communities. Over the period from April 2010 to date, compared with the same period last year, there has been a slight reduction in burglaries and attempts. This follows ongoing work across the wider area to reduce this type of crime, including extra patrols and targeting of regular offenders.
Also worthy note for the beat is a significant reduction in car crime. For the same period as above, car crime has dropped by 45%. In real terms this is a reduction from 11 to 6 reported offences. This is a welcome improvement.
However, figures for criminal damage have gone up compared to the same period last year. Drilling down into the detail reveals that the main reasons for the increase are the bin and play equipment fires reported on King George V Park and the setting alight of conifers in gardens, which happened over two separate nights in the spring. There was also a night in early August during which wing mirror damage was caused to several cars on Beechdale Road.
Any residents who have assisted the police in providing information relating to any matters are thanked. We rely greatly on members of the public to provide information and anyone who has information they may think is of benefit are asked to contact your local beat team. Confidentiality is assured.
Our current priority issues for the Beechdale area, as decided by local residents in consultation with the Police and councillors, are:
1) Anti-social use of motorcycles and quad bikes
2) Speeding
3) Anti-social behaviour on King George V Park.
Other issues that we are working on in the area include the following:
: BURGLARY ON TRENTHAM DRIVE
During the late evening of 27/08/2010 or very early hours of 28/08/2010, a house on Trentham Gardens was broken into. This is the first such incident in the area in some time and so we would like to reassure residents and provide some simple crime prevention advice to help reduce the chances of anyone else in the area becoming a victim. As usual, if you have any information about any suspicious activity in the area, please get in touch with either the Police or Crimestoppers.
Further patrols will be undertaken in the areas affected. Local residents have been spoken to and a leaflet drop has been undertaken in the area to alert neighbours. To help deter potential burglars, please ensure that you secure your properties properly, and don’t leave your windows open unnecessarily especially during warmer weather. Straightforward measures such as ensuring that your doors and windows are secured and that keys and valuables are kept out of sight make your property a less attractive target for criminals. If you would like a visit from the beat team to discuss your home security and to receive free Smartwater to mark valuable property with, please contact one of the team below.
: PARKING PROBLEMS ON KINGSBURY DRIVE
September will see the re-opening of local schools and will once again be working with St Teresa’s and Trinity Schools in particular to combat the ongoing traffic and parking problems on Kingsbury Drive at the start and end of the school day. We will continue to visit the road on a regular basis with a view to encouraging drivers to park and drive sensibly so that we can keep traffic moving and ensure the safety of pedestrians; particularly the school children. We would like to thank parents for their co-operation.
The leaflet design competition at St Teresa's Primary School which was ran jointly with the Fire Service last term yielded many excellent designs from pupils for a leaflet highlighting the issues to parents and drivers. The winning designs are being converted into a poster and leaflet to be distributed in the coming months. This followed a Fire Appliance driving down the street at school closing time, which highlighted an important safety issue as it had a few problems getting through.
We will also continue to liase with the Council to find a more permanent solution, and welcome ideas and contributions from local residents and parents attending the school. Further updates will be provided on the website as plans progress.
