Strelley

Back to Broxtowe and Wollaton

The Strelley Beat area is situated to the north west of the City Centre and is within the City boundary. It is part of the Bilborough Ward, and is bordered by Strelley Road on the south side, and Helston Drive on the east, but also incorporating Bramley Road and Bridge Green. The Moorgreen estate is the north east corner of the beat area, with the border falling short of the Broxtowe parkland. To the north the area includes all the streets leading off of Cranwell Road, as well as Lancaster Way and York Drive. The border of the area then extends westward to incorporate the Nottingham Business Park, where the Nottm DVLA building is located. The first few houses of Strelley Village are included in the beat, but most of the village is not.

The beat incorporates two warden-aided complexes for the elderly at Seagrave Court and Jubilee Court. Also on the area, there are two places of worship, the Kingdom Hall on Flamsteed Road and Christian Family Centre on Strelley Road, one school, Seagrave Primary School and two licensed premises, The Rose Public House and the Strelley Social Club.

Under the Policing Pledge, this is an urban beat and has a 15 minute emergency response time. For an explanation of what this means click here.

Beat Priorities

Through consultation with the members of the public in this beat we regularly set out a number of priorities to be tackled.

  • Anti Social Behaviour (Flamsteed Road Shops) Show details
As a result of public meetings you have told us that youths are congregating and consuming alcohol in the vicinity of the shops on Flamsteed Road. They are aged between 14 years to 18 years old. This happens most evenings between 6pm and 11pm.This problem becomes worse at the weekends. There have been reports of underage drinking, abusive behaviour, threats and intimidation to residents and people wishing to use the shop.

    Our Response
    OUR RESPONSE

·We will increase uniform presence from Police and our partners at Community Protection by patrolling these areas.

·We will direct Patrols to the area using intelligence led policing.

·We will work with our partners to increase diversionary opportunities for those aged under 18. In particular Youth Intervention, we will set up projects aimed at giving Young people in the area alternatives. This will be in partnership with our Schools, Extended Schools Services, and Youth Services.

·Where premises are identified as selling alcohol to underage persons we will mount test purchase operations.

·We will make use of CCTV cameras at hotspots to gather evidence and discourage anti social behaviour.

·We will consider making use of civil alternatives for example, Acceptable behaviour contracts and antisocial behaviour orders being made at court.

·We will respond to calls in relation to anti social behaviour on a more frequent basis and attend as urgent (60 minutes) or immediate (15 minutes) dependant upon the severity of the behaviour at the time.

·Where individuals are seen and spoken to on the street all information will be passed to our partners at community protection and Housing for action.

·We will work with housing officers from Nottingham City Homes, private landlords to invoke measures to deal with issues relating to tenants causing Anti Social Behaviour.

    CURRENT UPDATE August 2010

There have been no reported incidents of anti social behaviour outside Flamstead Road shops during July. One incident of theft of a childs bicycle has been reported. Routine patrols will continue but 2 public meetings have been arranged outside the shops during August. Please see Beat Events for details. In addition further plans will be made to arrange evening patrols to remove youths causing problems similar to those earlier in the year.

    UPDATE May 2010

Patrols are still continuing around the shops. The group of males responsible for the ASB cannot be named for legal reasons. The Strelley NPT have worked closely with Nottingham City Homes and the ASB Team to visit all the families of these offenders. They have all had official warnings over their children's behaviour and official action has been recorded. Their tenancies are being considered and although their behaviour has reduced drastically some elements of it are continuing. A zero tolerance approach is being taken and the police are prosecuting these youths for every matter possible. They all currently face a number of court appearances for serious offences over June and July 2010. We continue to try and engage with the young people in the area and our street racing events have been a great success..The next event will be soon please see our events listed on our web page.

    UPDATE April 2010

We continue to show a presence in the area, on the 20th of March 2010 as part of operation Portcullis, we linked in patrolling the area with our partners from the Special Constabulary, and Youth services. Until this is discussed at our next LAG meeting we will continue to patrol and monitor calls to the area.

    UPDATE 15th February 2010.

We arranged for a large number of officers who conducted patrols in a police van over the weekend from Friday 5th February to Sunday 7th February. The patrols passed the shops regularly. On all but one occasion no youths were found. On one occasion we encountered 3 youths who are also suspected of committing the majority of burglaries and car crime in Strelley. They were not committing any offences and were escorted from the area and did not return.

We are encouraging young people to engage in constructive activities but anyone found taking a part in ASB or intimidating other residents will be arrested and detained at the police station until the shops have closed.

    UPDATE 10th January 2010.

We are conducting regular patrols and will continue to do so.

An additional CCTV camera behind the shops has been approved and will be installed over the coming weeks. There have been delays in this being achieved due to signal testing and a lack of an electricity supply to the camera. This is being pursued and the camera will be installed as soon as possible.

We conducted specific ASB patrols from Friday 8th January 2010 to Sunday 10th January 2010 during every evening of this weekend. We focused on Flamsteed Road shops and are supporting the shops in terms of offering a more responsive service when the youths arrive. This has been a success in some terms as no youths have been found causing any problems.

On Saturday 9th January 2010 a small group of 4 youths were outside the shops. They included one individual responsible for a large proportion of crime and ASB in Strelley. The situation was explained to them reasonably but they were told to leave the area before they were arrested. They duly left of their own accord.

  • Anti-Social Behaviour - Lancaster Way Show details
Young people are congregating during evenings and causing anti social behaviour on parkland at the end of Lancaster Way. There are also complaints of similar behaviour in the adjacent streets.

The behaviour includes noise, drinking, littering, and riding mini-motos, causing a danger for others intending to use the facilities.

There has been an increase in crime in the area from the end of 2009. This is likely because the same individuals are responsible for the ASB and crime.

    Our Response

·We will increase uniform presence from Police and our partners at Community Protection by patrolling these areas.

    CURRENT UPDATE 21st May 2010

Several incidents which have been reported over the past 12 months have been brought to the police's attention by new information becoming available. There are 5 or 6 males involved in almost all cases and unfortunately they cannot be named for legal reasons. One of these males has had motorcycles seized since March 2010. He is also facing court appearances for these matters.

All the youths involved have also been and are being arrested regarding a serious matter which occurred in August last year where a scaffolding pole was wedged across Woodhouse Way and was struck by a motorist. The police will be taking a zero tolerance approach to prosecuting offenders for this matter.

Patrols passed this area regularly and on no occasions were any youths encountered.

Positive action is being taken against those suspected of criminal acts and ASB. The police are working in close partnership with Nottingham City Homes and our intentions are to warn and then evict any families who are part of this problem. Visits to initiate this process are being made during January 2010.

    UPDATE 10th January 2010.

We have increased patrols to address these issues, particularly during evenings and weekends. This will continue even when the problems are resolved.

Local residents were canvassed by the City Council, which led to the decision to fence the perimeter of the park. This will separate it from cut through leading to other parts of Strelley and Broxtowe. This cut through, although used by many residents legitimately, is also used as a primary route by criminals and youths causing ASB to get to the Lancaster Way estate unseen.

The fencing has been organised by the Neighbourhood Action Team and local police. The fencing has been purchased and is ready awaiting installation. It is awaiting final planning checks due to some objections raised at the last minute. Our local counsellor is pursuing the matter and the fencing will be installed as soon as possible.

We have already visited 4 families whose children are primarily responsible for most of Strelley's ASB and crime. We commenced specific ASB patrols on 8th January 2010 and included Lancaster Way, York Drive and the park. These were successful in some respect as no youths were found causing any issues around Lancaster Way or the park. Residents are urged to report all suspicious behaviour as at the very least reports will be used to justify our intention to treat this as a priority and resolve the matter.

Beat Update

CURRENT UPDATE August 2010

There has been an increase in house burglary in June to 11 cases, which is extremely high. This reduced in July to 5 and for the first half of August there has been none reported. The known suspects for these offences have been investigated thoroughly and every opportunity to prosecute them taken. Compared to the same period last year the increase in June means there has been a slight increase.

Motor vehicle crimehas reduced dramatically due to the prosecution of several known suspects. They have been identified by forensic evidence and other means. In June, July and the first half of August there has been 9 offences reported. Compared to the same period last year car crime has halved.

UPDATE May 2010

The Strelley Neighbourhood Policing Team has worked closely with the Burglary Unit, Nottingham City Homes and other departments to take a zero tolerance approach to offenders committing burglaries and car crime. In Strelley over the past 6 months this has largely committed by a group of 4 or 5 young males.
Every opportunity to deal with any of this group has been taken, and they are all currently facing court cases over June and July where custodial sentences are a possibility. All of the male’s families have been spoken with and any families supporting this behaviour will be evicted. A number of case files have been opened for this purpose. There has gladly been a reduction in burglaries and car crime of over 50% compared to the same period last year.

UPDATE April 2010

Like the tax year, the crime reporting year runs from April to the end of March, and I am pleased to say that for Strelley we have had 139 fewer reported crimes this year compared to last year, including 10 fewer house burglaries, 24 fewer criminal damages, 30 fewer assaults and 75 less vehicle crimes. In total there were 435 reported crimes for the area up to 31/3/10.
Burglary Dwelling reduced by 14%
Criminal Damage reduced by 17%
Assaults reduced by 27%
Vehicle crime reduced by 55%

UPDATE March 2010.

There has been a reduction in dwelling burglaries since March last year. We understand that the reduction is good but also believe we need to reduce this figure further.

There has been a big reduction in vehicle related crime from 130 to 55 vehicles broken into or stolen. Again we are pleased there has been this reduction but also accept more can be done. We would ask residents and businesses to remove valuables from vehicles when leaving the vehicles parked and unattended.

Criminal Damage has been reduced by 18 crimes but remains at 104 offences for the year since March 2009. This is linked to Anti-social behaviour our Community Priority. Please see the Community Priority section for updates

UPDATE 15th February 2010.

Crime levels have increased substantially through December 2009 and January 2010. Particularly, burglaries and car crime have increased.

A number of individuals have been targeted as they are suspected of committing the majority of this crime. The police have deployed a capture car which was broken in to and the same individuals were caught on camera breaking in to the vehicle. A number of arrests have been made in respect of this and other offences.

We are working closely with Nottingham City Homes. A number of case files have been opened and formal warnings given to the suspects parents who are NCH tenants. NCH will use any power within their means to evict families who's children have these attitudes and encourage this type of criminal behaviour
UPDATE 10th January 2010.

Over the latter part of 2009 there has been a steady reduction in the number of burglaries in Strelley. Unfortunately during December this again increased despite us making a number of arrests. We are currently investigating several individuals who are believed to be responsible for the vast majority of Strelley's burglaries, car crime and ASB.
