Beat Update
Updated 28/04/2012
Your beat team and partner agencies continue to work hard in your area to drive down crime levels and provide a visible presence to deter and detect offences. We would like to acknowledge the vast majority of law abiding citizens who have assisted us in this work. We sincerely hope this continues in order that we can all improve the quality of life in your area.
Crime figures run between April 2012 and March 2013 and though we are very early in to the performance year we have had 21 fewer offences then this time last year. That works out at a 31.3% decrease in all crime. This is a very positive result and something the beat team and all partner agencies aim to continue throughout the up and coming year.
The month of April has shown a reduction in burglary dwelling with -75% (-6 offences). Theft & Handling offences also brings a reduction with -73.9% (-17 offences) compared to April 2011. There has been a small increase in criminal damage with 5.6% (+1). This is an area the beat team are aware of and we will be reviewing each offence very closely in an effort to reduce further reports of criminal damage and to tackle the people responsible. And finally we also have a reduction of violent offences with -36.4% (-4) fewer offences this month.
In relation to the number of fires that had been set on the BMX track on Sellers wood drive last month, it gives me great pleasure to report that we have not had a single report this month and no further fires have been set on the track. The beat team worked alongside the fire service to combat this issue and I would personally like to thank the fire service for their help and support in addressing this issue. I hope that this continues and would urge anyone who uses the facility to remain vigilant and report any concerns to the police.
Earlier I reported that we have suffered a slight increase in criminal damage. Criminal damage includes Arson, Criminal damage to a dwelling, Criminal damage to a building other than a dwelling, damage to vehicle, other criminal damage and threat or possession with intent to commit criminal damage. All these offences can be racially or religiously aggravated. Your local beat team take each report of damage very seriously and understand the frustration and upset that a victim of such offence may feel. There are many things you can do to prevent you becoming a victim of criminal damage. Toughened glass is an option but obviously this brings cost implications. The use of lighting in and around your home may deter an offender if they believe that someone is in the address or is more likely to be seen if there is security lighting in place. Parking your vehicle under a street light would also add the same level of security and if you are lucky enough to have a garage then always take that extra few minutes to park your vehicle inside the garage. If your vehicle is parked overnight on the street always ensure that any valuables are taken out of the vehicle and not left on display. Close community relationships also help to deter crime. Looking out for our neighbours and their property and reporting all incidents to the police will help make our community safer and aid the police in detecting crime. The police would rather attend a report of a suspicious incident that may not lead to any criminal matter instead of attending a victim of crime.
Should you be interested in joining your local neighbourhood watch or even setting up your own neighbour watch I would be very happy to talk to you and arrange for this to happen.
If you have any information relating to who may be responsible for causing any criminal damage or any other offence then please contact your local police.
Alternatively if you have any information for the police but would rather report the matter anonymously you can call CRIMESTOPPERS, 0800 555 111.
I have been the Bulwell beat manager for just over a month now and am thoroughly enjoying the role. I would like to thank all the people that have made me feel welcome and it has been a pleasure meeting some of the residents and people within the beat area. My aim is to be as accessible as possible and to spend as much time out on the beat area to listen to any issues that you may have.
