Bulwell Town Centre

Back to Bulwell

The Town Centre is a small beat geographically, stretching in an elongated shape along the distance covered by the Main Street. The beat is made up of mainly shops and businesses. The shops are a mix of small, independent retailers, larger High Street chain stores such as Tesco,Argos, Iceland and Wilkinsons and Morrisons. There are few houses on the beat and 4 public houses.

There is a bus station, NET Tram stop and British Rail station benefiting the area which encourages visitors and benefits residents.

The area benefits from a Shop Radio Link Scheme where retailers are able to alert each other to potential suspects or problems. It also benefits from extensive council run cctv.

In the centre of Bulwell there is a charming park called Bulwell Bogs which is a great play and relaxation area for all members of the family in times of pleasant weather.

Under the Policing Pledge, this is an urban beat and has a 15 minute emergency response time. For an explanation of what this means click here.

Beat Update

28th April 2012

Hi there everyone and we hope that you are all well.

There has been a further offender arrested regarding the burglaries within Banks Yard who has also been charged with burglary offences at this location.
This is excellent news and the burglaries have now ceased. In order to prevent a further spate from occurring Nottinghamshire Police have helped the business owners by conducting a security survey of Banks Yard and all the business owners in Banks Yard have been supplied with a copy of the recommendations.

Sadly we have seen damage caused to windows at the rear of the Riverside Centre which amounts to thousands of pounds to replace. It would appear that groups of youths have been throwing stones at the windows causing damage. Please if you are passing and see anything suspicious ring it on 101.

There has been a reporting of a purse theft this month which is believed to have occurred on the market place. So stay vigilant and be aware of your surroundings and here are a few tips on how to prevent purse theft-

-Keep bags/pockets zipped/buttoned up.
-Do not leave bags/purses unattended ie on push chairs/shopping trolleys even if you turn away for a couple of seconds.
-Be aware of who is about and pay attention to anyone who may make conversation with you as they could be trying to distract you whilst someone else steals you purse.
-If anyone bumps into you check your purse/bag immediately-some thieves do this in order to get close to you in order to steal your valuables.
-If you have drawn money out at the bank/post office/cash machine make sure no one is watching you or following you.
-Only carry what cash you need and do not carry any documents like passports/driving licence/savings books etc unless you absolutely need them.
-Invest in a cat bell( which costs around 50 pence from a pet shop) and attach it to your purse so you will hear it if the purse moves.

Whilst we are giving out tips here are some regarding burglaries -

Top Tips for beating the burglars:

-Don’t give thieves a window of opportunity - Fit and use good quality locks on doors and windows and ensure they are closed, even when you are inside.

-Keep valuables and keys in a safe place, out of sight and at a distance away from windows and doors where they cannot be snatched. (Opportunist thieves take advantage of unlocked door’s and can very quickly step inside and snatch items such as handbags, purses and laptops.)

-Make your home appear occupied when out or away by using timer switches or leaving a light on.

-Consider installing outside security lighting and a burglar alarm.

-Don’t open your door to unexpected callers – check their identity first using a door viewer or a door chain. Always check the identity of business callers as identification cards will always be carried and readily offered. If in doubt, keep them out. Genuine callers will always provide a contact number for their head office in order for you to check the nature of their work.

-Mark your valuables with your postcode – speak to your Neighbourhood Policing Team about how to get Smartwater to protect your valuables.

-Lock away ladders, garden tools and other items that burglars could use.

-Remember – if you can get into your home without your keys – so could a burglar.

-Remove all property from your vehicle when you leave it unattended. Where possible, keep your car in a secure garage or on the driveway of your home. If you park in the street make sure it is locked and in a well lit area.

Remember that the Town Centre Beat Team offers the chance for you to chat with us at our advertised beat surgeries which can be found on the Notts Police web site. Take a look and if you are passing come and have a chat with us about town centre beat issues and any queries that you may have.
Of course we are also available to talk to when we are out and about on the beat so please stop us in the street if you can not make it to the surgeries.

Take care and we hope to see you soon.
