Radford West

Back to Canning Circus

The Radford West area comprises of a very culturally diverse community with numerous specialist food and retail shops. The area also has a large student population, most of whom attend the nearby Nottingham Trent University and University of Nottingham.

Radford was the home of Players Cigarettes and Raleigh Industries, once the world's largest bicycle producer. It provides the backdrop for much of Alan Sillitoe's book Saturday Night and Sunday Morning. Numerous scenes from the film of the book, which starred Albert Finney, were shot in Radford.

In the Centre of Radford West is the John Carroll Leisure Centre that offers a wide range of activities for all age groups.

Beat Update

Update - 18th May 2012

The Radford West NPT continues the ongoing work alongside our multi agency partners in order to tackle the problems that the local residents tell us is of most concern to them. Alfreton Road and the surrounding smaller streets continue to receive attention from the police and our partners. It is the responsibility of everyone to help reduce crime within the beat area. If you don’t tell us, we can’t sort it out!!!

The summer months are almost upon us. 2012 is a unique year within the lives of most people. We will see and experience events that most of us will only ever see once in our lifetime. The Olympics, The Paralympics and the Queens Diamond Jubilee are all taking place and celebrations, both nationally and locally will mark the events. Street parties will celebrate the 60 year reign of the Queen and the Olympic Flame will make its journey through Nottingham on its tour of the British Isles before arriving in London for the start of the Games.

If you are planning to take part in any event covering the Jubilee or coming to see the Torch, please enjoy the celebrations and the atmosphere!!! If you are either thinking of becoming involved in any of the street celebrations for the Jubilee, coming into the city or any other area to see the Torch, or simply planning to watch the Games once they are underway at friends house or licensed premises, please safeguard your property and belongings. The Jubilee and the Olympic celebrations will doubtless involve large numbers of people and it is easy for criminals to operate in large crowds. Please take time to read the few tips here to make your involvement more enjoyable and trouble free.

1. Safeguard your belongings by NOT putting wallets in back pockets or purses in open bags with the zips undone. Put wallets in inside pockets, preferably with a secure zip. Make sure that bags are slung across your upper torso. This will make it virtually impossible for your bag to be taken from you by a criminal looking for an easy picking.

2. Make sure your house is secured if you are leaving it for the evening and if you have a burglar alarm, SET IT BEFORE YOU LEAVE.

3. If you are planning to leave your car anywhere, make sure it’s locked and none of your belongings are within sight. Take expensive items such as Sat Navs with you.

DON’T MAKE IT EASY FOR THEM!!!

Only by reporting incidents to the police either via the 101 non emergency number or if it is taking place at the time, via the 999 system, can the police adopt the most positive approach to problem solving with the area.

If you wish to report a crime over the phone please contact the police on 101. If the matter you wish to report is an emergency or so serious that someone is in immediate danger please call 999.

If you wish to pass information anonymously then please phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or at www.crimestoppers-uk.org
