A police volunteer was recognised for going 'above and beyond the call of duty' at Thursday night's (2 November 2017) Nottinghamshire Police Awards, sponsored by Nottingham Trent University, the Nottinghamshire Police Federation and Mazars.

Geoff Parkinson said he was ‘really surprised but very honoured’ to receive his Police Volunteer of the Year Award.

He has become an integral part of the Force's Fraud and Financial Investigation Unit (FIU) since he started working with the team in March 2010.

Since then he's been involved in a large number of investigations, during which he has analysed and prepared complicated evidence which has led to convictions and confiscation cases as well as opening up valuable lines of enquiries in investigations.

When he first joined the Force, Geoff, a retired solicitor, volunteered as a front counter clerk at the former Calverton Police Station before moving into his role with the FIU.

He said: "As a volunteer with the FIU team I get satisfaction from doing something that is really helpful in combating fraud.

"I’d encourage anyone thinking of applying to join the Force as a volunteer to do it. "There are so many opportunities available and things to do if you look around.

"Everyone makes you feel welcome and trusted and you’re allowed to get on with it."

Financial Investigation Manager Clare Dennis, who nominated Geoff for the award, said: "Geoff has become an integral part of the FIU team and he continues to provide invaluable support to all.

"Geoff regularly gets involved in office discussions and is always prepared to make suggestions and ways to work smarter and more effectively. He has taken on additional roles where necessary and does this with great enthusiasm. He definitely goes above and beyond when working with the team."
