Following a police investigation into reports of loud bangs heard in the Hyson Green area this morning (Thursday 11 October) we can confirm the cause of the noise was a car backfiring.

Officers were called at 10.30am after members of the public reported hearing two loud bangs in the area of Birkin Avenue at its junction with Gregory Boulevard.

There were no reports of anyone being injured and no reports of any damage.

Early fears that a firearm may have been discharged have been discounted and, on reviewing a number of CCTV systems and speaking to witnesses, it is clear that a car travelling along Gregory Boulevard was having mechanical difficulties and backfiring.

The call was made in good faith and we'd like to thank the public for their patience while we carried out our investigations.

All roads, which were closed to allow for police searches, have now re-opened.
