Police operation sees major burglary reduction
Posted on 27th August 2010
Burglaries in three Nottingham beat areas have reduced by nearly 80 per cent since the launch of an operation earlier this month.
Officers have been stepping up their fight against burglars committing offences in Aspley, Bells Lane and Broxtowe.
Operation Cerberus has seen increased patrols in the areas and residents being given effective and useful crime prevention advice.
And the team has already seen some early success.
Since the operation was launched on Monday 9 August, only three burglaries have been reported throughout the three beat areas. This is compared to 14 burglaries in the same period last year – a reduction of 79 per cent.
Supt Mike Manley, who has led the operation, said: “People who live locally will notice more bobbies on the beat and we and we want everyone to know we are here to make a real difference.
“There has been a reduction in burglaries since the operation began, but we are not complacent. We will continue our patrols in the area.
“We not only want to find those responsible for these burglaries, but we want to advise residents about how they can avoid becoming a victim in the future.
“I hope that local people take the opportunity to engage with us and let us know about the issues that most affect them.”
In many of the incidents reported before the operation began, opportunist burglars gained entry because a front door or window had been left unlocked.
There are simple measures people can take to safeguard against becoming a victim of burglary.
Residents should ensure their homes are secure at all times, even when they are at home.
Care should also be taken to ensure car keys are not left lying around and that valuable items like laptops and jewellery are not left in full view.
Anyone with information about a crime should contact Nottinghamshire Police on 101. Alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
