Five arrests were made during two days of targeted action against criminals in Bassetlaw.

Police in Worksop staged the Days of Action in the East and West of the district on Monday 20 February 2012 and Tuesday 21 February 2012 in a bid to bring to book those who continue to thwart the system.

The Force worked with Bassetlaw District Council, Nottinghamshire County Council and Customs and Excise in roadside checks off the A57.

Scrap carriers and their loads were specifically targeted by the metal theft team. They issued four fixed penalty notices, prohibited three vehicles from the road and seized two.

All scrap metal dealers in the district were also paid a visit.

Other vehicles being spot-checked for defects, red diesel, and licence and insurance validity resulted in the issuing of seven fixed penalty notices, three motorists receiving prohibitions until their vehicle could be made safe, and five vehicles being seized for lack of insurance.

Licence checks were also made at off-licences and pubs, and the penalties of selling to under-age customers reiterated.

During the two days police executed a number of search warrants at addresses across the district.

A 35-year-old man was arrested in connection with receiving stolen goods, following a search at an address in Shrewsbury Road. He was bailed pending further enquiries.

A search at the King Edward VII pub in Ryton Street ended in a 30-year-old man being arrested on suspicion of burglary and theft at two Worksop pubs in December.

At the same time, a 33-year-old man was also arrested for being in possession of Class A drugs.

Both were bailed pending further enquiries.

Two woman, aged 22 and 41, who were wanted by police for failing to appear in court, were also detained. They remain in police custody.

Two other warrants, in Norfolk Road, Bircotes, and Richard Street, Retford, led to the seizure of a substantial amount of suspected cannabis at each premises. No arrests were made.

Detective Inspector Ash Wilson, of Worksop CID, said: “These days of action require a lot of effort and coordination and are highly resource intensive, but they are vital and extremely effective tools in the comprehensive and targeted action against criminals operating on our patch.

“The partnership approach is pivotal to ensuring we use every avenue available to detect crime and secure prosecution against offenders.

“Through intelligence, prevention and enforcement on a collaborative front we are able to supplement our day-to-day policing in one fell swoop.

“We can strike at any time, day or night and, as this week attests, we will.”
