Five-and-half years for city bank robber

A man who admitted robbing two banks in Nottingham has been jailed for more than five years.

Victor John Franklin, 59, of Buckfast Road, Lincoln, had pleaded guilty in December to committing robbery at branches of Lloyds TSB bank in Low Pavement on 25 July and in Lower Parliament Street on 17 October last year.

Franklin had also admitted possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

He was arrested after handing himself in at a police station in Lincoln, having seen an appeal for information about the robberies on BBC’s Crimewatch programme on 15 December.

He was interviewed by officers from Radford Road CID in Nottingham and charged the day after the broadcast of the appeal.

Franklin admitted having carried out the robberies after getting into debt.

On both occasions, he had gone into the banks and queued with other customers until called over by the cashier.

He then presented a note to the cashier, demanding money be handed over and warning them that he had a gun.

Franklin also gave the cashiers a bag to fill with money.  Once the money had been placed in the bag, he calmly left the building.

In total, he stole more than £6,000 from the two robberies.

Appearing at Nottingham Crown Court on Thursday (26 January), Franklin was jailed for five-and-a-half years.
