New Leadership For Nottinghamshire Police Authority

Posted on 28th May 2010

The Annual General Meeting of Nottinghamshire Police Authority held today (27th May 2010) saw Authority members secure new leadership for the coming year.

After a two-way contest between Cllr Jon Collins and independent member Alan Street, Cllr Collins was elected as Chair of the Authority having received a total of 10 votes, while Alan Street received seven votes, in a private ballot.

This was followed by the election of the two new Vice-Chairs of the Authority, where three members stood for selection.  The decision to return to two positions of Vice-Chair was taken at the Authority's meeting on 8th March 2010, in response to the increased workload placed upon those holding the office.

After two private ballots, Cllr Mike Quigley and Cllr Glynn Gilfoyle were duly confirmed as Vice-Chairs.

Following his appointment Jon Collins said:  "Firstly I would like to pay tribute to the outgoing chair John Clarke for his contribution to policing and his tremendous public service over the last ten years.

"Moving forward, I'm grateful to have the support of my Police Authority colleagues and I will work hard to do all I can to make sure that trust is justified.  Most importantly, we have a clear job to do, working as a critical friend to the Force; helping, supporting and challenging them as they continue to drive down crime across Nottinghamshire, doing everything we can to support the level and rate of reduction.

"This year there are a lot fewer victims of crime in Nottinghamshire, but there is still too much crime.  It is the job of everyone on the Police Authority and in the Force to put that right."

Chief Constable Julia Hodson said: "I am looking forward to working closely with the new Chair and Vice-Chairs to meet the challenges that both the Force and the Police Authority face over the coming months.

"The Police Authority will play a vital role in working with the force to make the city and county even safer places, and I know Jon Collins, Mike Quigley and Glynn Gilfoyle all have the same determination to continue the improvements in our performance as I do.

"Together, we can deliver the policing service that the people of Nottinghamshire want and deserve."
