Custody Visits & Animal Welfare Schemes

Custody Visitors

A custody visitor is a volunteer who makes surprise visits to the cells to check that suspects are being well looked after. The Authority’s scheme has been praised as a model for other police authorities to copy.

Custody visitors find the role particularly rewarding and an excellent way to perform an important role, with responsibilities, without a high time requirement.

For more details read the custody visit guidance notes, which can be found in the library section of this website.

Animal Welfare Visitors

The Authority also runs an Animal Welfare Visitor Scheme. These are similar to custody visitors but instead, the volunteers check on police dogs and horses. Visits are made to the kennels, stables, training grounds and vehicles to ensure that all police animals are happy and well cared for.

As a result of comments from the Animal Welfare visitors, the dog kennels at Police Headquarters have been given a total refit to improve the conditions for the police dogs when they are not working.
