A man has been sentenced to a hospital order following an unprovoked attack on a woman in a Beeston park.

Richard Pickworth, 57, formerly of Beeston, was previously charged with the woman's attempted murder but was deemed unfit to plead.

Following a 'finding of facts' hearing at Nottingham Crown Court he was today (Tuesday 10 September 2019) given an indefinite hospital order.

The victim, aged in her 70s, was attacked in Beeston Fields Park on the afternoon of 11 January 2019.

She received hospital treatment after being stabbed to the head with a cutlery fork.

Detective Constable Fiona McVey, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "This was a nasty unprovoked attack on the victim who was walking her dog on the park at the time.

"It was lucky that her injuries were not more serious and I'd like to praise the actions of the four members of the public who came to her aid and contained Richard Pickworth until police arrived.

"I hope this sentencing gives a measure of comfort and closure to the victim and I hope that Richard Pickworth receives the treatment he needs as deemed by the court."
