A 36-year-old man has been sentenced after head-butting a woman and kicking her while she was unconscious on the floor.

Garry Allen, of Woodend in Worksop, pleaded guilty to assault and assault by beating at Nottingham Crown Court today and was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for two years.

The charges relate to an incident on 22 September 2019 when Allen was heading to the supermarket from his flat and argued about finding a coat, before the unprovoked attack on the woman.

The victim suffered excruciating pain and collapsed. When she woke up she had a table and mirror leant up against her.

The woman went to a neighbours before going to hospital for treatment to her left eye, which required six stitches. She also suffered large bruises to her thighs.

Detective Constable David Nicks led the investigation. He said: "Allen's behaviour was totally unacceptable.

"I'd like to praise the woman's bravery in coming forward. We know it's never easy for people to come forward following domestic abuse.

"I hope that other victims of domestic abuse that read this, come forward and contact the police, find the courage and speak out.

"If you are experiencing abuse, I would encourage you to contact the police on 101, or local partners who can provide you support and advice."
