Police thank public after urging people not to call over Coronavirus

We’d like to thank members of the public for their understanding after we asked them not to call our Force Control Room, particularly on our 101 number, asking us about the Coronavirus restrictions.

We’re now receiving fewer of these calls but we still need people to stop calling our Control Room asking us about this as it is stopping us being able to deal with emergency 999 calls, which is putting the public in danger.

These are direct instructions from The Prime Minister to all citizens and will be supported in coming days with supporting legislation which will provide powers of enforcement.

Superintendent Paul Burrows, from Nottinghamshire Police’s Contact Management department, said: "The number of calls we’re receiving about the Coronavirus restrictions, which is not currently a policing matter, is shrinking but we still need people to follow our advice.

"Please don’t call us unless it is a policing matter and only call 999 in genuine emergencies.

"By not calling 999 when it’s anything less than an emergency, you can help to ensure Nottinghamshire Police’s team of emergency call handlers can be on-hand for when people really do need them.

"Please think before dialling and only call 999 when life is in danger, someone is seriously injured, someone is using or threatening to use violence, a crime is in progress, there is serious damage being caused to property or whenever else an immediate police response is required."

We are dealing with a national emergency and we would ask that you now comply with The Government advice being given which is to stay indoors and to keep away from each other. We strongly advise that you adhere to this at all times.

The advice is very clear – if we don’t all take responsibility to do this now then you are putting yourself and others in danger and this in turn will be putting unbearable pressure on the NHS in coming weeks. The measures have been put into place to protect our country and to protect the vulnerable.

The only way to help prevent the spread of Coronavirus in our communities is to follow the advice and we would urge you to do this now.

101 is the number to call when you need to contact Nottinghamshire Police and it’s less urgent than a 999 call. Calls cost 15p, no matter how long the call lasts.
