Suspect charged and remanded over report of man with machete in city centre

A speedy police response resulted in the arrest of a suspect and seizure of a machete within five minutes of getting a call about an incident in the city centre.

Officers were alerted to a man seen in Old Market Square with a machete at 8.46pm yesterday (Thursday 15 October 2020).

Police arrived on scene within minutes and, at 8.51pm, arrested a man in South Parade on suspicion of being in possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.

David Myrie, 62, of Waverley Street, Nottingham, has been charged with possession of a bladed article in a public place and remanded to appear at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court today (Friday 16 October 2020).

Sergeant James Hirst, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "Weapon-related offences are taken extremely seriously and we had a number of officers on the scene within minutes of this incident being reported and made a swift arrest.

"We’ve now been able to bring a suspect before the court and we await the outcome of this case.”
