Drink-drive suspect charged after car loses wheel in crash

A suspected drink-driver has appeared in court after a car lost one of its wheels in a collision before then crashing into a wall.

Officers were called to Cranwell Road, Broxtowe, just after midnight on Sunday (23 July), following reports of a road traffic collision.

At that point, police discovered a vehicle with one of its wheels missing that had been left with its hazard lights still flashing.

The car reportedly sustained the damage after crashing into a parked car, before carrying on for a short distance on three wheels and hitting a wall outside a house.

Shortly after attending the scene, police located a suspect who then went on to fail a breathalyser test.

Gary Culley, 61, was subsequently charged with failing to stop after a road accident and drink-driving.

Culley, of Cranwell Road, Broxtowe, has been released on bail to appear at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on 10 August 2023.

Sergeant Paul Crofts, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “It really should go without saying but there is absolutely no excuse for anyone to ever get behind the wheel if they’ve had a drink, or are under the influence of drugs.

“We will always take reports of drink-driving and drug-driving seriously, because of the dangers driving while under the influence can pose to people.

“The consequences of doing this can be devastating – for the driver themselves, other road users and pedestrians too – which is precisely why we will always respond to these reports robustly.”
