Six arrested in city centre as neighbourhood team address local concerns

Six arrests were made as neighbourhood police held their latest day of action to clamp down on crime in Nottingham.

The city centre neighbourhood policing team patrolled local streets, including the Sneinton Market area, to seek out criminality on Tuesday (6 August).

The proactive operation – which was also attended by the city’s Knife Crime Team – yielded positive results, with numerous people arrested for a variety offences.

The arrests included:

• A 27-year-old man wanted on suspicion of burglary of a commercial premises.

• A 54-year-old man wanted for burglary and multiple breaches of a Community Protection Notice.

• A 31-year-old woman suspected of committing a theft by finding offence. Further arrested for possession of mamba and breaching crown court bail conditions.

• A 37-year-old man suspected of possession with intent to supply Class A drugs.

• A 34-year-old man arrested on suspicion of theft. Further arrested for common assault after attempting to bite a police officer’s leg while being restrained.

• A 35-year-old man wanted for failing to appear at court in relation to drug offences. Further arrested for possession of a class B drug and a knife, as well as for racially abusing a police officer.

All six suspects were taken into custody for questioning.

Sergeant Jono Pothecary, of the City Centre neighbourhood policing team, said it had been a very productive operation. He said:

“We’ve been listening to members of the public who have come to us with information and this day of action was all about us acting on concerns people have rightly raised with us – for example, drug dealing in the Sneinton Market area.

“We had 35 officers and seven police vehicles take part, including a mix of plain-clothed and uniformed officers, and the impact of that deployment was absolutely fantastic.

“We had some amazing results, including six arrests for offences such as carrying a knife or drugs, failing to appear in court and breaching bail conditions.

“We also detained suspects who we’d been looking for in relation to crimes such as theft and burglary.

“In short, we’ve gone out, listened to the community and targeted individuals who bring misery to the city centre.”

Following the day of action, the team held a debrief at Central Police Station, where one of the officers revealed traders at Sneinton Market had thanked the team for their efforts in tackling issues in the area.

Sgt Pothecary said:

“The feedback has been great. Literally within 10 minutes of ending the operation today, officers came over and informed me they’d had market stall holders and owners of small businesses say how fantastic it was to see the police taking action and how appreciative they were of us being there.

“That was really good to hear and we will continue to carry out proactive patrols to make the city centre an even safer place to live, work and visit.

“My message to the public is this work is happening on a daily basis. We are listening to what you’re saying and we are doing everything we can to address your concerns.

“We can’t fix everything in one go. Some things are going to take time. But we are tackling the issues that you bring to our attention.”
