Police find burglar hiding in city centre building

A suspected burglar was detained inside a city centre building following a quick police response.

Employees at Nottingham Mechanics Institute, in North Sherwood Street, discovered an intruder inside the premises as they arrived for work on Monday (24 June).

They asked the man to leave but he refused, so they exited the building and called 999.

Response officers arrived to find the burglar had locked everyone out.

They forced entry and, following an extensive search of the two-storey building, found the suspect hiding behind an office door.

The 30-year-old was in possession of a work phone and Wi-Fi dongle belonging to the educational charity.

He was arrested on suspicion of burglary and taken into custody for questioning. 

PC Reece Lewis, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“No employee should have to arrive for work and find an intruder inside their workplace.

“The members of staff did the right thing in leaving the building and calling the police. We were quickly at the scene and the suspect’s attempts to hide failed miserably. 

“Following the arrest, the suspect was taken into custody for questioning and later released under investigation while further evidence is gathered.

“Crimes of this nature simply won’t be tolerated by our force, and – as shown in this incident – will lead to a robust response.”
