New police cadet base officially launched in Hyson Green

A new police cadet base has been officially launched in Nottingham.

The base, which is located in Hyson Green, has been created in partnership with the Majority Black Led Churches and first opened in September 2023.

Volunteer Police Cadets are a nationally recognised police uniformed youth group in England, Wales and Scotland.

Now, Nottinghamshire Police’s newest cadet base has officially opened following a launch event on February 29.

The new base at The Vine Community Centre on Bobbers Mill Road offers young people a programme of police and skill-based activities and sessions, including guest speakers and visits.

In Nottinghamshire, junior cadet sessions are available to those at secondary school between Years 7 and 11, with senior cadet sessions available to those in Years 12 and 13.

The launch event was open to members of the public who wanted to drop in and find out further information about Volunteer Police Cadets or those who expressed an interest in joining as a cadet or volunteer leader.

It showcased examples of activities that cadets get involved with as well as an information stand after being promoted in nearby schools and community venues.

Chief Superintendent Sukesh Verma, Superintendent Heather Maelor and pastors from the Majority Black Led Churches attended as special guests to help launch the new community initiative.

A total of 40 cadet leaders, made up of police officers, staff and civilian volunteers, offer their time, skills and knowledge to operate the force’s five cadet bases by running weekly sessions during school term time to almost 100 young people across Nottinghamshire.

The cadet groups, which also run in Mansfield, Bulwell, Bestwood and Police Force Headquarters, aim to help young people gain an understanding of policing, learn life skills and improve teamwork.

Lyndsey Hufton, Citizens in Policing Coordinator at Nottinghamshire Police, said: “It was great to see the cadets and leaders from our new base coming together to promote what police cadets is all about to their family, friends and members of the public interested in the programme.

“The base is now established and the cadets have all given such positive feedback on how much they are enjoying coming to their weekly sessions.”

There are around 100 volunteers in Nottinghamshire Police who regularly give up their time to help keep communities safe.
