Dispersal order issued in Radford after fireworks disorder

A dispersal order has been introduced in Radford as officers seek to prevent a repeat of disorderly behaviour seen earlier this week. 

Neighbourhood officers will be on hand to break up groups who are perceived as causing or likely to cause nuisance.

It comes after a large number of young people gathered in Midland Way on Bonfire Night (Tuesday), with fireworks launched at surrounding buildings and parked vehicles.

There were also reports of young people launching fireworks at each other.

Multiple police units were deployed to the incident, with fireworks then aimed at officers and other emergency service colleagues who responded.

No serious injuries or damage was reported.

The incidents remain under investigation and, with the weekend now here, a temporary dispersal order has been implemented to combat any further disorder.

The order, which was first issued on Tuesday, was reissued on Thursday evening for a period of 48 hours and may be re-imposed at any time.

It covers the area around Midland Way and St Peters Street.

Inspector Liz Gaskin, of the City Central neighbourhood policing team, which is based at Radford Road Police Station, said:

“We have introduced this order to prevent potential disorder following incidents earlier this week.

“Patrols have been increased in the area to deal with any issues, and this dispersal zone gives officers on the ground extra powers to approach people they believe could be there to commit anti-social behaviour or disorder.

“This order is aimed at ensuring law-abiding people are not subjected to any such behaviour, and I ask that people continue reporting any concerns and we will take action.

“If you witness any anti-social behaviour or criminal behaviour, or have any information about such incidents, please contact or speak to our officers and we will take action.”
