Motorbike gear-wearing burglary suspect arrested by Newark officers

Response officers detained a suspect within minutes of being called to reports of a burglary.

Police were called after hearing a break-in was in progress at a builder’s merchants in Newark.

A window was reportedly smashed with a brick by intruders to gain entry to the yard, in Northern Road.  

After being briefed that the suspect was wearing motorbike gear and riding a moped, officers attended the yard.

They arrived around 10.35pm on Tuesday (24 September) and immediately did a sweep of the area to try and locate the suspect.

Officers quickly spotted a stationary bike matching this description in Yorke Drive, as well as someone hiding behind a car nearby.

At that point, police got out of their vehicle and approached the suspect, who responded by trying unsuccessfully to ride away on the bike.

A 22-year-old man was detained seconds later and arrested on suspicion of burglary. He was also arrested for failing to comply with a community order.

Further inquiries then established that the bike had been stolen, so the suspect was additionally arrested for theft too.

Sergeant James Skeats, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “By getting to the scene as quickly as they did, our officers were able to immediately locate a suspect who may have otherwise managed to evade us.

“Despite it being dark at the time of this call, this didn’t hamper the response officers in attendance from spotting someone crouching behind a car as they searched the area.

“Break-ins like the one reported here can have a real impact on people’s livelihoods and have a lasting effect on victims.

“That’s why we treat all reports of burglary so seriously and would always ask anyone who spots an offence to report it to the police, as was thankfully done here.

“By calling us straight away, we were able to take immediate action and ultimately make an arrest.”
