Shoplifter jailed and ordered to keep out of stores

A persistent shoplifter has been jailed and ordered to keep away from the stores he had targeted.

Jack Baldwin carried out a series of raids on supermarkets and other stores in areas including Beeston, West Bridgford and Clifton.

He repeatedly walked into shops and brazenly stole items before leaving without paying.

Baldwin, aged 31, of no fixed abode, was arrested after an investigation by multiple neighbourhood policing teams.

He pleaded guilty to 14 counts of shoplifting and appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday (3 September).

Baldwin was jailed for a total of 25 weeks and also made the subject of a Criminal Behaviour Order which bans him from entering Co-op stores in Wilford, Clifton and West Bridgford.

He has also been ordered to keep away from Sainsbury’s stores in West Bridgford and Nottingham city centre.

The order will be in place for 18 months.

Inspector Tim Cuthbert, neighbourhood policing inspector for Rushcliffe, said: “Baldwin is one of a relatively small number of persistent shoplifters who are responsible for the vast majority of these offences in our communities.

“The combination of jail sentences and CBOs make an effective tool in our battle against these thieves.

“Repeat offenders can expect a robust response from police and the courts if they breach their order.

“These court orders have real teeth and recent sentences handed down to other offenders who have breached them reflect that.

“By working effectively with our partners we can secure these orders and make it an offence for persistent shoplifters to even enter individual premises.

“Baldwin has long been identified as a prolific shoplifter and is well-known to shop staff.

“We hope the order will serve as a deterrent to him and give businesses some respite.”
